People who pretend they know loads about computers :@

Just read through this entire post and for the most, what I found was people saying how much they know and how stupid others are....
Flaming "friends", setting people up, embarrasing people....I know "world champions" are annoying but shouldnt there be a better way to handle situations like these?

Well usually I try and help someone and they tell me I'm wrong and go and do it their way but in the end it still comes back to asking me for help.

So clearly if they knew best why would I need to fix it?

I have a friend that thinks an apple mac is better value for money than a pc. I dont even bother talking to him about computers anymore. He is a lost cause.

Had someone in pcworld (seems like a theme) say that a laptop i3 was a quad core processor. Even when i showed him the specsheet from intel on my phone, he still insisted. Had said nothing to the guy until he tried to pull that on my friend. There was a reason he took me along.

Only other one was saying that all AMD cpus are faster, cooler and quieter than intels, said my PhenomII was a much better processor for everything than the i5 3570K. Gave up at that point.

Christ :huh::lol:

Attached is a (crappy) photo of a conversation between a friend of mine (in blue), who had recently bought a pre-built 'gaming' pc, and his friend (in red) who was apparently very good with computers and the like. Basically the tech dude is trying to convince my friend that the 16GB of RAM he bought is actually 20.8GB because it's 1333MHz, which is "not standard RAM". This guys annoyed me so much but, being British, I said nothing. What annoyed me even more was the fact that my friend refused to listen to any of the advice I gave him such as "you really should build your own" and "you definitely don't need 16GB of RAM", but hung on this other guy's every word.

/rant

Disclaimer: I don't claim to know everything about computers, and this guy may well have known some things that I didn't, but he practically advertised himself as the God of Silicon while he was making up random equations.

@Conelton

Wow, even I've never heard that particular one! You need to show your friend his ram in something like CPUz where it shows the raw clock speed prior to the multi being applied - i.e. my 1600mhz DDR3 Ram shows as 800mhz. You can then demonstrate how he's been "ripped off" and show him how to "download" some more ram... heh.

Scoob.

lmao that would be great

That is so devious I might have to try it ;) Although he didn't believe me when I told him that he could improve his performance for free by OC'ing so he might actually be too skeptical for his own good.

Well I just remembered another nice story.

A friend of mine wanted to get himself a new PC for gaming & rendering and asked someone he knows and works in some kind of tech store to pick parts for it.
Said person came up with this:
- i7 3820
- GT 430 1GB passive (because why pick something like a gtx560ti that also "has 1gb of ram" if it's 200 bucks more right?! lol)
- 64GB SSD
- some 400W PSU

can't remember motherboard and RAM, but the listed parts are all you really need to know
no harddrive or cpu cooler btw
luckily he asked me about this build before ordering anything.. lol

wasn't it a 3930k?

The best one i have had is when one of my "friends" asked me what parts he should buy and I gave him a pretty good gaming setup for under 7000SEK (about 700£ atm).
Some time later he got the parts and i offered to build it for him as this was his first time and he didn't know a lot about computer building, but he said no.

After a while he called me and asked why the CPU fan and CPU would not fit (yes both the CPU and mobo was 1155) I then asked him to send me a picture of the CPU area..... this was what i got...

As soon as I saw the photo I again offered to fix all of this for him but he said no and sins then we have not spoken.

received a message from a friend yesterday that his pc wont turn on so i offered to go look at it he replied "its ok i took it to pc world they said it was broke so i bought a new gaming one" i asked if he still had the one i built for him last year he said yeah but its broke i went and looked at it all what was wrong with it was a loose sata cable.. reconnected it to his ssd and well was fixed...

the gaming rig pc world sold him put it this way i would burn it..

core i3
z68 msi motherboard the basic one..
2x4gb 1066mhz dd3 generic ram
2tb HDD
windows 8 basic edition..
grapics card was a hd6870 as he only had it less than a few hours i told him to take it back and get his money back his reply "but its a gaming pc cost me £775

the rig i built him last year

core i5 2500k
asus maximus iv
8gb 2133mhz corsair ram
120gb ssd
1tb hdd
560ti
blueray drive

actually spent less on the one i built him that what he spent at pc world yesterday.. i told him it was junk and wont play his favorite game at anything playable..

so he tried bf3 on his shiny 24" 1200p monitor and guess who was right..

so we proceeded to pack it up and take it back to pc world where i took his pc back in with me and showed them how i fixed it there tech guy charged him £40 and didnt even look at it.. i was not impressed got a full refund on the pc + the £40 tech guy charge refunded afaik the tech guy now no longer works there i made a massive stink in the store and well im now banned from the premises but it was worth it.

i think i cost them about 30 customers who were in there when i was going off on one lol

an i3 and a 6780 plays BF3 no problem.i had i3 2100+560Ti .64 players on high ,2xAA @1080p 35 FPS + .6870~560Ti . nicely done but cut that anything playable from there .and one does not simply put an i3 on a z68 board lol...

>35fps+
that is not playable.

well he has upgraded the rig i built him last year with a second 560ti and if you read my whole post you would see the rig i built him in febuary last year was way better.

it was an older i3 2100 that was on the one from pc world which i made him take back how they deemed it a gaming pc is beyond me... i seriously think it was mislabled or something...
