Hey guys

got a pc to fix

On shutdown the psu carries on like normal and there is hdd activity blinking fairly rapidly.

Is this the PSU or the mobo? Mebbe a bios issue?

ok just disconnected all drives inc hdd and there is still a "clicking" noise around the ram area of the mobo - what made me think it was the hdd - along with the blinking light.

edit:

it was the speaker clicking...didnt spot it lol

either way im still stumped

Sounds like it might be going in to standby/hibernate rather than powering off. Have you checked the windows power options to make sure it is set to shut down when power button is pressed? Or does it do it on Start>Shutdown method too?

does it when going start > shutdown.

it carries on clicking from the speaker until i turn off power at the back/turn the machine back on - to which it boots like its just been powered up

i feel that if the psu isnt broke, it cud be a motherboard job - eugh!

bump

got the new psu fitted and it does the same, powers off, everything goes off apart from psu and hdd light is flashing and theres somethin which sounds like hdd activity.

soon as i press the power button again it starts to boot as if its just been off

anything else to check/change or is it the motherboard?

Bios in the power section. Off button to be 4s is usually what I use.

The S1/S3 settings can be changed also and see what happens.

Make sure all the wakeup settings are OFF for usb/nic/keyboard etc. (u may find that currently pressing space or similar will start the pc up again)

Also turn off hibernation and perhaps sleeping on the OS.

Has to be the motherboard surely? Have you checked the cellar for gremlins as well?

I know it sounds daft but you never know - Have you checked the wiring for the switch / HD to MB connections in case there is a bare or dodgy connection (or swapped out) somewhere or the MB pins. Scraping the barrel I know but it has been pirate week :)

it will be something in the bios keeping the PSU on for a while in order to keep it cool and to extend its life as you can buy chips/cables and install them in the MOBO it would do this regardless
