PC Locks up after exiting a game

BF3 goes crazy when alt+tabbing. it caused display driver errors with my graphics card overclocked and on stock clocks. i also get lockups from time to time when i alt+tab and exit games, but most of them happen with my overclocked GPu

Ok, so I reverted back to an older driver, 306.97 (was the last file other than the latest I had)

Got the same problem again although this time I noted down the message before it all locked up.

DISPLAY DRIVER STOPPED RESPONDING AND HAS RECOVERED
Display driver NVIDIA windows Kern Mode (i think its pixelated and hard to make out) driver, Version 306.97 stopped responding and has successfully recovered

And then it locks up.

If i was you, after uninstalling then re-installing the gfx card(get drivers direct off the website) if the problem still happends then i think your video memory could be faulty, try a benchmarking sofware for your gpu. If your problem still there send it back if they find no fault do not accept the card back!! get a refund.

Ok, are you using Windows 7? if yes, go to Power Option in COntrol Pannel options and see if you have Power saver mode enabled...

Yes I am using windows 7 and I have just checked and its not on power saver.

I just did a windows re-install and I got the same message again.

However this time it didn't crash my system.

Is your windows set to "Balanced" power profile? If yes set it to "High Performance" . I heard that this will cause issues like yours when exiting a game. If you are using "High performance" then it's not. I wish it is cause it would be an easy fix and will save you from head aches.

After your last post when I checked the power rating I saw it was on balanced and just instinctively changed it to high power.

After the last game test where I ran FarCry3 on max settings for 40mins and got into a big fight to try and get the card to flex its stuff a bit while alt-tabbing and I didn't seem to have any problems this time.

I will keep testing other games tonight to see if I can make it happen again.

Thanks for all the support

Who needs customer support when you have the Overclock3D forum guys :D

You're welcome. I know I had a bit of an issue with this setting myself, and it did the same thing to me, lockup when quitting a game with my graphics card overclocked. After changing back to High Performance, my overclock seems to be stable. It also happend when at stock clocks but not as many times as with it OC. After wanting to try and OC my CPU further I went back from "Balanced" to "High Performance" just to see if it somehow holding back my Overclock. I started using "Balanced" because "Cool&Quiet" won't work if you don't have a power saving feature turned on in Windows. After doing this I noticed that my card won't freeze anymore, and then I thought about that and your issue being similar... and I also searched some other forums and found other peple having this issue with stock settings, and as a fix used going from a power saving feature to "High Performance".
I hope this was the only issue, and you don't have to change your graphics card. Now, thinking about this has made me wonder how many others that have experienced this problem went trough hell and never realised that the fix is this simple.

unfortunately it seems the problem has once again reared its ugly head.

This time believe it or not It was caused by alt-tabbing (after doing so well with FarCry3, it was SWTOR that caused its downfall this time)

Im really at no clue what to try next

Did it happen at the first all+tab? Try going back to the latest drivers if you haven't already. This is a strange issue and it would be a shame to be a faulty hardware.

It was the first alt-tab after I had loaded SWTOR.

Yes Ive already gone back to the latest drivers

Its irritating me because I used to alt-tab things all the time and never have a problem.

The card was only purchased in may.

Try putting it into a friends computer and run it for a while see if the problem persists there as well and if it does then... The card's faulty.

A friend popped round today with his gtx650 and it ran all the games without any problems and exited to desktop without causing the same problem I was having

Good, you should of tested your graphics card in another computer , just to make sure ( It's how I like to do things. test everything till I am sure ). If you are already convinced, you should RMA your card.

Well if it's still under warranty you could tell them about the problem send it back and hopefully they will send another one , working this time.

Well Im going into the store tomorrow to see what they can do.

If I can somehow manage to get store credit or something does anyone have any recommendations on what card to get. As Im really not impressed with this one only lasting just about 6months.

Well I don't know why you went for the 670 in the first place where there are better cards like the 7970 for the same price. I think, if possible, you should get a 7970 instead.

Yeah, It was more of a case of I didn't really know what to buy. I had a price in mind of how much I wanted to spend and went on recommendations.

So everybody recommended the 670? I am surprised, knowing there are better cards at lower/same prices. Look into it, see if it's a go go.
