PC Locks up after exiting a game

Hi guys,

I built my first rig not too long ago and its been all plain sailing till now.

Recently it seems as I exit a game my PC locks up and I cant do anything but reset the machine.

Games like FarCry 3, BF3, SWTOR, Sleeping Dogs all run fine (on max settings) while in game, but its when I exit them the screen freezes/locks up and random pixels/lines are on the locked screen.

I have a EVGA GeForce GTX 670 2048MB graphics card. Ive changed nothing to it. Its settings are as out the box.

I have the most up to date driver available for it installed and have tried re-installing the driver as well.

If anyone could advise it would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the same resolution for desktop as you do in-game ?

And, can you alt-tab to desktop whilst in-game and everything seems ok ?

Seems like a graphics card issue i.e. a faulty graphics card. Try your games with a fresh install on another hard-drive if you can. It would be even better if you have a spare graphics card you can try to determine whether or not it is the 670 that is causing the issues.

Yes Im using the same resolution as my desktop as in game.

While In game I can Alt-Tab back to desktop and then back into the game fine. Its only when I quite to desktop I get the problem I have described

I don't have a spare card as this is my first rig I've built myself. Until this point I've always had laptops. Also I only have a 2tb hard drive where I keep my games and just my os and frequently used programs on a small SSD

It's worth a try, just to pinpoint where the problem is. I forgot to ask, have you overclocked anything else? If you have, revert back to default settings and re-try. Also, are you running the games off Steam?

I went into the bios setting and noticed the ram was on auto so I reverted It back to 1333MHz and that seems to have solved the problem.

Will this setting be ok or should I have left it on auto ?

It's ok, If your RAM's frequency was higher than 1333MHz it is possible that the voltage was too low and sometimes you need to manually set it to the normal rated value. I have encountered this issue a couple of times. Causes instability and errors.

Well, Auto defaults to 1333MHz anyway, so it shouldn't have made a difference. You sure you weren't using an XMP profile? XMP profile settings are usually stable as they set the timings and command rates to the correct values.

My Mobo does have a xmp profile on it. However, seeing as its working now I may leave as is for the time being until I feel like taking another stab at it.

Thank you to all those who offered there help :D

Ok so I thought It was fixed but it seems I was wrong.

When playing on BF3 and Alt-Tabbing a few times I got the error again.

However, this time I noticed a little balloon come up saying that the driver had stopped responding but had recovered and then this is when the system locks up.

I have now gone into the BIOS and changed everything back to what it called its safe default

Can anyone recommend what to do next or should I be getting in touch with my Graphics card manufacturer ?

It's either the driver, or your graphics card. try using a different GFX for a few hours , just to rule out the posibility that other components in your computer are causing this.. Borrow one from a friend for a few hours atleast. If the problem stops, ofcourse it might be your card, or display driver. Then put back your card and try going back to an older driver version , assuming your driver is up to date. if the problem stops, then it's most likely a driver issue... and stick to that driver version untill a new version is released and ... update.

^^This is probably your best option. Or you could do a complete re-install.

Yeah before I start trying to borrow cards and what not Im going to try putting an older driver back on to see if that work and then failing that looking at a complete re-install.

When you say complete re-install, what do you actually mean?

I think he meant a fresh OS install...
Anyway, do the driver thing at first, let us know how it went, ok? Fiddle around a bit with it, play intensly, alt-tab while in the game, quit a bunch of times... force that driver to give an error.
BTW, does it happen every time you exit the game? Every single time?

Yes it happens every time I exit a game. It seems the only game that causes it while Alt-Tabbing is BF3

Its fine Alt-tab while playing Farcry3

Ill play around with it and give you guys the results in abit.

Thanks for everyone's continued help as well :D

BF3 goes crazy when alt+tabbing. it caused display driver errors with my graphics card overclocked and on stock clocks. i also get lockups from time to time when i alt+tab and exit games, but most of them happen with my overclocked GPu
