Hey peeps got a problem that's been driving me batty my system keeps hard locking and each day seems to get worse the first day was once then the following got more and today I've had 6 and my system is not under any load when it's done it all I've been doing is watching netflix web browsing or reading a book and it's been happening for about 6 days now anyone got any ideas as to what it may be and where to start looking and the funny thing is it hasn't locked up during my nightly gaming sessions when the system is under a little bit of load
Cheers for any replies

check your HDDs and ram using memtest/checkdisk. It could be purely coincidental that it doesn't lock up under gaming.

Check the hardware first then report back :).

All tests passed
Temps as follows
C: SSD 54
G: SSD 30
Board 40
5930k 39
980ti 1 55
980ti 2 44
lockup with xmp on and off
So I thinks it's either the latest nvidia driver or windows 10 update causing it a mate of mine is having the same issues with a 4790k windows 10 and nvidia graphics

Also went from firefox to chrome still locking up might have to go back to pre vulcan drivers and see if that works

Try running latencymon it should tell you if a particular driver is causing locks.
Also check event viewer for warnings errors around the time of the locks.

Well the strange thing is I just gamed playing MWO for 2.5 hours without a single lockup or anything going wrong got me stuffed just had a look in event viewer and the errors mostly are skypehost.exe

Try uninstalling skype see if that stops them?

I don't have Skype installed but the damn thing is built into Windows and I can't see it in add and remove Windows programs or regular add and remove, maybe I need to install the thing and see if there are any updates for it that might stop the issue

Download CCleaner. It has the ability to remove programs that Windows doesn't let you. Pretty sure Skype is there in the list iirc. If you already have it, needs to be updated to the newest version for it to get this feature

Just be aware with CCleaner it doesn't list all of the apps so you may not have the option of removing Skype if not you might have to use Power Shell commands to remove the app

Ccleaner did have it listed as get skype and allowed me to uninstall it so I shall monitor things and see how it goes and thanks to all for your replies also my last crash was corsair link

Hey Excalabur,

You really have been in the wars. I recently built my new rig (check the sig) and mine starting locking up because of the XMP profile on the Tridents. It started as soon as I left the bios so it wasn't hard to work out.Hope everything with your rig smoothes out for you mate.

Thanks buddy I don't think the issue is with my ram it's been tested and it was locking up xmp or not TBH I think it's a software conflict as it didn't start till after a Windows and Nvidia update but I'm hoping it settles down soon

It seems to be a NVLDDMKM crash thats causing the hard locks so I tried to clean the driver with DDU and reinstall all to no avail

I would try booting up live Linux distro DVD (or even better install it on some empty drive) for that web browsing stuff you have mentioned. It will have set of it's own drivers which means that if your problem persist then it's most likely an hardware failure.

The only time I ever had a hard lock (PC totally unresponsive, hdd light solidly lit) was due to a bad Sata cable. It was forcing the hard drive into some sort of self test loop.
