PC gaming stuck in a trough ?

Rather than throw out too much detail. If u can propose a PC built from parts available Xmas 2006 (or Q1 2k7) and compare to Q1/2 2k8 - I think on the gaming side of things, the pc will perform similarly if not the same. Cosmetic benchmarking will obviously be different, although probably not as much as u think.

A reflection of the market ?

Apologies for posting in an old thread, but I have to say I agree with you 100%.

A college classmate of mine built a PC back around that time -

QX6700, Asus Striker Extreme (680i), 8800GTX.

It still handles games as good as any mid - high end rig with more recent hardware. Now having said that he payed quite a bit for the QX6700 and 8800GTX.

But on the other hand even if you replaced the QX6700 with an E6600 you'd still have a machine which would handle games pretty well at modest resolutions.

Well i dont see how PC gaming has to do with hardware hoenstly :/ I mean to an extent but games havent really been "pwning" lately. There have been no "Doom3s" and no "HL2s" lately. You got Cod4.....and....CoD4. Crysis is sh1t tbh.

Yeah plenty of recycled same-ole titles using tweaked old engines, some of which require dx10, but not really.

Theres a major lack of imagination out there.

I disagree that a rig with a qx6700/88gtx could handle any of the newer demanding games at a high res (22-24") with eye candy on like, say my rig for example.

This is a resoltion thing.

Also, nothing can max crysis yet and developers are probably avoiding bringing out another game that cripples everything out there.

They need to make things more efficient. I'm looking forward to seeing all the dx10 effects in clear skies and seeing how it runs.

Agree re the lack of imagination and dedicated streamline dx10 engines. Someone needs to step up...

The only amazing DX10 engine i've seen is Crysis.. The rest are still DX9 games but DX10 options.. But apperently Crytek are making a new Cryengine that optimizes older PC's (better than Crysis: Warhead) and this new engine should be out in like 2012.

Think Kemp would answer that best atm cos he`s chosen to stick with the card, or the ultra or whatever, and had a 24" for some time.

Don`t think we can count Crysis with full candy as.. well I`m not sure todays best can handle Crysis at completely full candy on a max res 24".

Yeah but Matt has his own reasons for sticking with the 88GTX; he dislikes multi-gpu setups which include the X2 and GX2. Even though they kick the old GTX's a$$.

Also, the 280 which is a single gpu solution kicks the 88GTX... I've got a feeling Mr. Kemp wants a card to appear that ruins alll cards, much like the 88GTX did at launch.

There are games that the 88gtx won't play smoothly at high res with just high candy, let alone max... Excluding Crysis; WiC dx10 maxed out, grid maxed out, AoC etc.

Anyway this thread isn't about the capabilities of the old tech, or is it?!!

True.

But if you take resolutions such as 1600X1200, and 1280X1024, a rig like the one I mentioned will perform pretty solidly up to today (Obviously you might have to turn down settings in some places but the difference is minimal).

I gamed at the 1280X1024 up until very recently.

Couldn't agree more. Dx10 to all intents and purposes has offered pretty much nothing over Dx9 IMO since it came out.

I can max Crysis out DX10 at 1440x900 and can leave AA turned on until the aliens start coming. And thats with my puny ass little rig.

Crysis dosent look all that amazing to me though.

Well its a back and forth thing. You can never have middle because people are never happy. When the 8800GTX/Ultra where top you had people

ing they wanted a badass graphics engine to whoop these cards and just look amazing. Well Crysis came out and then people wanted better hardware and started saying that devs shouldnt do stuff like that and make games that only top end rigs can play. Well now that the 4870X2 and the 280 is out people are back to the "We need better looking games. Oh yea dont forget multithreaded support....and sprinkle a few PhysX support in there too. Oh yea think you can make it so that way there my little brothers

ty rig can play it too? Were just making impossible game engine gumbo!!" So, theres really no middle.

Good Point.

I think the moral of the story is that software has really fallen behind hardware so in essense all the upgrades since say Christmas 2006 have been kind of pointless unless you are doing pretty specialized tasks or are gaming at a very high resolution.

Unless you bring in things like Crysis into play. I mean they downed the graphics so it didnt shart on todays hardware so much :p

I totally agree with that, software is too slow for hardware.

Thread Wake Up! :)

I am personally totally fed up with the computer world at the moment. Computers are very slow to advance video games are all being ported from the lacking consoles and it shows.

I find myself looking elsewhere for my little "fix". Being part of the news team I get to look though all the recent movements in computing and to say the least they are all dead boring.

"Ooo Palit has developed yet another Geforce 9600GTXSWERD..." which has the same amount of processing power as a gold fish. Because of this it get increasingly hard to choose good interesting news for you guys to read. :(

Aye? Play Crysis on a console 1080p ;) Oh wait, they cant hehehe.

I'd have to disagree with you there.

The hardware side of things is more exciting than ever atm with all the new stuff. For example one of the more recent things is the launch of the 6 core Xeons.

It's the software world that's dull atm imo.

If SSD's came down in price and some monster GPU's came out at a reasonable price along with FC2 and some other awesome titles then it would be interesting...

We need games we want to play and we want hardware that makes them fun to play/look amazing...

It`d certainly be interesting, and we`d get some really high bench scores and stuff.

But what about the games to run on them ? Everyone will install Crysis again to see what it`s like, see a minor improvement of sorts and look for something else to play. The something else would play equally as good on the kit they used to have - argueably.

How old is Crysis now ? We gotta w8 for Crysis2 for the next thing to push pc hardware cos it`s poorly coded, but looks a bit better than the 1st one. Probably be able to play it at mid-high settings with no AA or something stoopid.

Checking out Mercanary2 over the weekend, not expecting much.

Crysis: Warhead is out later this month IIRC. I wonder if we will still find Crysis' graphics 'impressive' in 2-3 years time. The game does look real, but probably not in contrast to some games which may be released in the near future.

+1 for modern technology.
