Suggestions on a new CPU......

Hey guys,

I'm caught in a little bit of a dilemma, and wanted to know what others thought. So I currently have a Z270 Maximus IX Hero motherboard paired w/ an i5-6600K (my Z170 board died). I recently got a 1070 Ti, and am gaming on a 1080p 60Hz monitor. Now that I've got the 1070 Ti, games like AC:Origins and Ghost Recon Wildlands do tend to have some awful frame drops in some places. I know I need a new CPU for these games to stay above 60fps, but I'm unsure of what to do. It would be much cheaper for me to get a 7700K and throw it into the board I have now, or I could go w/ an 8700K but then fork out the money for a new motherboard.

As far as budget is concerned, it is a bit tight, but I COULD afford the 8700K and new motherboard, it just stings a little :P. I am PURELY a gamer, no content creation, or streaming, or anything like that. I know that newer games are finally starting to be able to utilize the extra cores and what not, but do you guys think it's even worth it to fork out the extra for the 8700K? I could get the 7700K for about $280-$290 USD and call it a day, or I could go 8700K which is about $380-$390 USD, along w/ another $280 for a good motherboard. I do plan on upgrading my monitor to 1440p 144Hz w/in the next few months as well.

So what suggestions do you guys have for me? Just want to hear some other opinions on what the best way to spend (or save) my money is. Any responses would be gladly appreciated! Thanks.

My suggestion will always be the same when it comes to hardware, Get THE BEST you can afford at the time, So if you can afford the 8700K and mobo, Then go that route as the benchmarks do show it has a nice performance lead over the 7700K in a fair few games plus more and more games are taking advantage of more cores.

Little tip you could try, stop using in game V-Sync and use NVIDIAs Fastsync from the NVIDIA control panel.

Especially in wildlands, try no V-Sync and set frame limit to 50 also try different AA settings. It's a tricky game to get running constantly above 60fps on high to ultra even with a 1080Ti.

I have a 4790k and a 1080ti. I get a lag once an a while. The CPU isn't up for crowded places :) Go 8700 or Ryzen 8core.

Another thing to consider, Is your storage device up to the task? I'm not 100% but I've had a few friends encounter frame drops from time to time playing various new games and since upgrading their HDD, installing the game on an SSD or M.2 Drive have sorted the problems out for them. Just an idea.

And on a second note. IMO a 1070ti isn't enough for a 1440p monitor.
Not all agree with me. But if you want to play AAA games at Ultra settings, 1070ti is gonna have a hard time keeping 60+ FPS

Nah I totally agree. My Titan XM wasn't cutting it anywhere even close to comfortable any more when I got rid of it and that was a while back now. 1440p maxed out Fallout 4 would dip into the 30s on Far Harbour and that wasn't acceptable. And that wasn't any of the new games either. It also struggled with The Division, again at times going into the low 30s.
