Parcelforce weirdness

Any1 wanna answer the question as to why I had a letter this morning invoicing me for £32 vat and £8 handling, for a parcel sent to me from the states ? (not a parcel from a purchaser, this is from a friend)

I haven`t seen it yet, but I`d imagine so coz just like our custom slips - they have to fill out something very similar.

Thinking of what it might be, the value is prob $150.

Same thing happened to my bro when he bought 3DSMax from the States.

In the end he had to cough up the same amount as it would have cost over here.

Some you win, some you lose.

my stuff that got sent freom the state which had a value of $400 dollars apparentlly, i got charged, 13.50 parcel force fee, an customs vat

something in the envleope must of been worth more then £50

Means he didn't mark it up right. He needed to put somthing un-taxable on the decleration. Return to sender or enginering sample ususaly work.

If it was bought outside of this country and your importing it they charge you tax.

I won't go into the full economic situation with taxes but here is "VAT 101"

Goods are cheaper in america (fact)

If there was no VAT/Tax then everybody would import/buy from USA

Hence, british goods and british companies wouldn't sell and wouldnt make money.

The more money that goes into a government = the more money that comes out, hence making everything else cheaper

You pay taxes on these goods for economic stability in the country you live in, yes its a pain, but its the only way :p

As for admin fees, the same principle applies, its not like they can take their wage from your 17.5%, and where else would they get the money from if thr wasnt an admin charge? Yep, you got it, your taxes, at least this way, the only people who pay for imports, are those that actually import illegally.

Yeah I was thinking about that, but it would be strange for a postmaster to fill the thing in incorrectly.

I`ll have to see the package for myself to see where the cuffufle is coming from. From my way of looking at it atm, it`s a parcel from one house to another, nothing purchacable, and it`s had VAT put on it ?

It has to be how the custom thing is filled out. Either that or they`re gangsters.

Had another thought - prehaps the custom thing has come off ?!?! - pfft i dunno.

LOL it would appear funny if u were to have a birthday present sent to u, from abroad, and the hm customs want u to pay them b4 u can have it. Drugs`n`drink aside they can eff it.

@DavOs - 2 letters, B & S. :p That`s alot of buzz to cover what summounts to extortion.

Its done to protect the stupidly high UK prices. If they did't impose these taxes frag could open a company importing stuff for us.

And its your friend that fills out the customs decliretion, not the postman. So for future referance u need him to put it down as either a return (tax would therefore alreay have been paid) or a enginering sample between companies, meaning its taxless.

He means the friend who sent it. Its the same if you buy anything else of value from outside the EU, you have to pay tax. If this wasnt the case then everyone who smokes would buy their cigarettes from morocco for £2 per 200, or all their electronic gear from hong kong. Sometimes doesnt feel right if you get caught by it, but thats how it is.

Ok, here`s the deal, coz I don`t know how Kemp feels about doing this on here, but can we attempt to break this down ?

Way I`m looking at it, peoples on here sending things to and fro - so it sounds like a suitable debate.

The red written label on the box says to the effect "All goods sent into the European Union over the value of £16, £36 for gifts, are subject to TAX".

I`ve now seen the parcel and I can understand (however criminal it may be) how the charge is taken onboard.

The customs note was filled in as:

Computer Parts. Value $300 and marked as a gift (I can`t answer why) & return to sender.

There is no "tax paid" thing on the form, there is an "Importers reference" where u can fill in a VAT number, but that`s it.

---------------------------------------------------

Now the debate as I see it is, how do u fill this in without getting any charges on it ?

Bear in mind also, that I`m all for bending or fracturing laws, but definately against outright breaking them. - but I believe laws should be sensibly just and not tyranical.

Apart from the basic To & From sections u fill out, there are 17 sections to fill in:

1) Detailed description of contents.

2) Quantity.

3) Net Weight.

4) Gross Weight.

5) Value.

6) Total Value.

For commercial senders

7) HS Tariff Number

8) Country of origin

9) Postage and fees.

10) Check one: Airmail/Priority or Surface/Nonpriority

11) Check one: Gift or Commercial Sample or Merchandise or Documents or Returned Goods or Other.

12) Comments (concerning quarantine etc)

13) License Numbers (?)

14) Certificate Numbers (?)

15) Invoice Number (?)

16) Date and senders sig.

17) Incase of non delivery: Treat as abandoned or return to sender or redirect to address below.

I`d be keen to hear Frag pov tbh.

I don't understand what your asking?

The best way to get a gift from a friend in the US is to mark it as a "product sample" or something similar and mark the value as very low. The drawback is that you only insure it for like $5-15

I don`t understand why u`d need to mark it as a sample if u`r gonna mark the value down so low.

U got a scope of £36 for a gift. So even if marked up as a gift u can value it as about $55-$60.
