Hi, I'm new to this but it looks like I could get some help with my overclocking here.

I've got a E4400 overclocked from 2GHz to 2.45Ghz, but I want to push it more. I've havent changed voltages or memory timings yet.

Whenever I did try to increase the voltage, the PC would'nt get past POST and restart 2-3 times.

Specs are:

Motherboard - GA-P35-S3

RAM - 2GB Generic

CPU Cooler - Xigmatek Red Scorpion

what are your temps and what speed id your RAM

It will all depend on how your bios is made up. I had an E4500 which I can't for the life of me remember the stock speed of now as it spent most of its life cranked to 2.8 and beyond (depending on the time of year). It was all in the FSB on that one but my board split the memory and FSB frequencies so it was simply punching in the numbers for the ram and then cranking on the FSB until it got creaky.

Just checked. 2.2ghz. So yours should be able to hit at least 2.6es.

Also, if you haven't changed any settings with the ram then it will be getting the full FSB speed. You either need to offset the ram frequency (which will lower it so that when you are done with your FSB it will end up around the speed it needs to be at) or split the frequencies completely.

If you overclock your ram too far then that will be why it doesn't post. Overclocked ram is far less forgiving than an overclocked CPU.

Temps are topping at 50's at load after 24 hours on Prime95

RAM is 2GB Kingston PC2-5300 (333MHz)

50s is quite high for a dual cored CPU. However, the technology in that CPU is from the dinosaur age so they will run hotter. Stability is the main thing tbh. IIRC with my Noctua NU92 thing I hit no more than about 45 under load and 27 idle.

Ok, so if i wanted to push this a little further, how do I think I should do this, what should I be changing to get to at least 2.5GHz?

It will all be down to your FSB and voltage mate. The problem will be unlinking your ram from the massive FSB increase. Sadly on that part you are on your own as I have absolutely no idea how your bios is laid out and what options it offers

Try and remember you are using a budget board. I was using a 680i tri SLI board worth about £350 so the options were in abundance (even though the VRMS were dog turd and it slammed into a brick wall on OCing).

The trick here is to get your ram to the speed it runs at whilst massively increasing the FSB. Your multiplier is totally locked down so FSB/Voltage/ram link is where the secret lies

Just noticed your ram.. Old, slow.. You absolutely MUST unlink that from the FSB. It'll go bang otherwise.

Voltage

I would suggest downloading CPU-Z and make sure you have a stable and accurate voltage. Often you'll set a MoBo to a certain voltage only to find out it's way off or fluctuates. A pencil mod has always worked wonders for me. I also agree with the others you for sure should unlink your mem.

Ok, I have a problem now. I recently reinstalled Windows again and I've only just noticed that CPU-Z and Windows XP are not recognising the 2.45GHz overclock I had stated before and rather stating that the CPU is running at the stock speed 2.0GHz. Refer to the attachments and help me out, thanks heaps!

Oh and also what do you mean by unlinking my RAM and how do I do this? My RAM is in 2 slots that are the same colour if thats what you wanted me to do.

ok so here are a few things we need from you to be able to advise you the right way. We need screenshots of cpuz (the cpu,memory timings and spd tab ) , screenshot of memset and temperatures and voltages ( you can use speedfan/coretemp/cpuz hardware monitor) . Also what happens when you hit F5 while you are in the bios. And if it changes any menu options can u take a pic of that as well please. E4400s usually did 3 ghz w/o issue. See if you can a chance to take those pics and we'll do our best to help you.
