OS For File Server ?

Dicehunter

Resident Newb
In the midst of building my file server, The case, Mobo, CPU, Memory, HDD's etc... I have all planned out but I have no clue about which OS would be best suited to the task.

Any pointers are appreciated :)

I don't actually know which is best and I was about to ask myself but people will probably want to know what its use is and how much tinkering you would care to do.

Windows 7 professional seems the best way unless you want to fork out £250 for server 2012 essentials

-edit- FFS this is why killing home server off was a bad idea Microshaft

There are a bunch of open-source/free operating systems for things like this. I believe Tek Syndicate review a couple of them; they seem like they know their stuff.

Would that interface with Windows 8.1 though ? Or would Windows 8.1 be a choice ?
