Opteron 146 Cabye Clock

Hello All

Well couldnt resist buying one of these baby's and i must say first impressions say they are all they are hyped up to be :D .

It is a AMD Opteron 146 Cabye 0540 FPAW.

Only had it in for a hour and got it clocked to 2.7ghz on stock volt's and stable, Take a look at some screenshots:

I dont know if you mind pictures this big but i can link them if you want it 56K friendly.

I am impressed with it so far and will up the voltage later and try to hit 2.8ghz to 2.9ghz or maybe even the magic 3ghz but i am only on air. I am using a Arctic Freezer 64 (not pro).

Sam

Edit

I got to 2.8ghz (AMD FX57 Speed, £700 CPU) after upping the voltage to 1.475 in the bios:

Sam :D

Edit

I have just done a Super Pi 32M test at 2.8ghz on 1.44V (set to 1.475V in bios), Here is the result:

superpi_32m.JPG

All seems stable and my memory is running exactly at 200mhz.

I am going to leave it at that for the minute and might try for more later, During the Super Pi 32M test is sat at 50C sometimes hitting 53C but coming back down to 50C, Is that ok?

Sam

Edit

Couldnt resist pushing it a little further :D

I tried 2.9ghz on the same volts and it was 100% stable in Super Pi but as soon as i did a Prime 95 Torture Test it got a error so i reduced it to 2.85ghz and this is my outcome:

opty_2.85ghz.JPG

It is 100% stable after 45mins Prime 95 Torture Test and several 1M Super Pi test's and 1 Super Pi 32M test.

Might try upping the volts tomorrow to reach 3ghz.

Latest

Here is the latest clock on my opty 146, Notice the core speed hasnt changed but the voltage is lower:

Still a bit unhappy with the super pi 1M score.

What mobo have you got?

I've only overclocked before on the FSB and multipliers and not been able to add any extra voltage - there isn't an option in my bios to do it.

I've got an old mobo, do most nowadays allow you to change voltages or do you need a more expensive platinum/pro model?

Well mine is kind of expensive but worth every penny.

I have got a DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR.

Cheaper motherboards dont allow high htt speeds which limit your overclocking. Before i got this motherboard i had a Asus A8V Deluxe, They are perfect for the average user and you can get a ok clock on them but the HTT wont run any higher than 250mhz which limits everything.

If you want to overclock i would say get a DFI board and you wont look back.

That's a heck of an overclock BTW, don't the 146's ship at 2.0GHz?

They sure do and i hear they have now been discontinued by AMD as they were putting people off buying the A64 range, I had a amd 4000+ which was not half as good as this. I bought this Opty 146 from the USA but they are available from the UK on ebay etc. Worth every penny mate.

If you are going to buy a Opty 146 make sure it is a good stepping like mine. The stepping i have "CABYE 0540 FPAW" is supposed to be the best stepping out but very hard to get hold of, Hence getting it from the USA.

Sam

u have the exact same stepping as mine....mine maxes out at 2.8, and thats what its runing at currently...need new ram though.

What ram are you using as i am not exactly using expensive ram just geil 2X1gb pc3200.

U have the second to best stepping mate. According to bourne and the guys over at XS the magicly delicious guaranteed 3ghz stepping is CABNE.

You're well on your way to a great oc though mate! Bump the voltage up and see if u can ding 3ghz :wavey:

What is the max voltage i should go on air, I think it was around 1.6V to be on the safe side and also what voltage should i try next.

Sam

I know this might sound stupid but i cant seem to change the CPU Voltage on this motherboard.

Its a DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR which i bought as a OEM therefore i have no manual.

Sam

ummm son looking at ur temps with prime at def. volts , i wouldnt recommend giving ur proc 1.6V unless u plan to knock the IHS off. These opterons run hot but they do oc nicely.

Personally i am 50 mhz short of 3 ghz on my CABNE 146. Thinking of taking the IHS off in the next couple of days :D .

IHS = integrated heat spreader

the big big of metal on top of the chip that spreads heat.

volt and overclocking options are in "GENIE BIOS SETTINGS" and then change CPU VID CONTROL i think

Yer i found that, I am leaving it at 2.8ghz on 1.44V now.

Well i am leaving it over night encoding, lets hope nothing is popped when i get up in the morning as it is at 46C - 48C 100% load

you have a nice overclock, i think those temps are alright for amd but im no expert on opterons

i have a quick n00b question, im guessing there are temperature advantages from removing the IHS yes?
