Nvidia launch GTX460!

This appeared to have been very much on the quiet in my mind. I only found out by luck a couple of days ago that they were launching something new at all. Today it seems what we were waiting for was the GTX460.

Depending on the manufacturer you choose it's 5 numbers and 75 notes shy of its' slightly bigger brother making it kind of an oddball interms of pricing. If you follow the chain down in terms of where cards theoretically compete against each other then, 480 = 5870, 470 = 5850, 465 = 5830, and 460 = 5770.

Now form that angle it may seem that NVidia has tried to bring affordable gaming from the new 460 and indeed it almost has with prices starting at just £159 it may not seem a bad deal. More so when you look at the initial data release where at 1900x1200 / 4xAA / 16xAF, the GTX460 apparently outperforms the 5830 with an average of 30fps and 22fps respectively.

If you look at it from that point of view though, does it not seem that Nvidia has shot itself in the foot somewhat introducing a card that with more testing isn't probably that far below its' slightly bigger brother performance, yet nicer on the ears with better cooling being completely redesigned akin to the larger fan (and presumably 'F***ing huge great big bit of copper' eh Tom? :p) on the ASUS EAH5870 V2 reviewed on here recently.

So overall, it seems ASUS have finally read the dictionary definition of 'Value for money' and released a card that performs pretty well and looks like it should be cooled better, whilst making the much more expensive and poorly cooled 465 seem a bad buy in anyones books. Discuss :D

I think if Nvidia can produce any Fermi card for an affordable price it will sell well. When I got my 9800GT I was fully aware of the 4850 bringing up its rear. I knew I should have gotten a 4850 as it performed considerably better than the vanilla 9800GT but I must say the old green fanboy part of me kicked in and well, the rest is history.

Performance isn't what matters here. Nvidia + DX11 + the Fermi name = success no matter how they go about it.

Up until now it has been impossible to say "I own a Fermi series 4xx card and have spent less than £200" where as in contrast that is piss easy on ATIs lineup.

Come on Nvidia, at least try and fight. Even if you're on the ground with a bloody nose and feel dizzy from the concussive blows that have been rained down onto your heads at least go out fighting !

hmmm thy seem aggressevly prices £210 for the 1gb gainward GLH eddition AKA there top end 460

lets see how they perform

The current lineup I have managed to find, starting with the most expensive (and best looking IMO) EVGA £179.99

Onto the next most expensive, Asus, £174.99

Cooler not as nice on that one IMO. Then onto the next, Sparkle, whose cooler is nice. £164.99

And finally the cheapest one, Palit, £159.99

Oddball pricing. Currently it competes/sits in between of the 5770 and 5830. Let's see how it performs.. I very much look forward to the OC3D review ! Bring on Bryan :D

Infact. Whilst the Asus cooler isn't full shroud it appears to have 'go faster stripes'. This could be very interesting indeed :)

EDIT. Wow. I just found a review... This one could be a resounding success for Nvidia. Not only did it beat the 5830 in Crysis (was expecting that) but it also beat it in Dirt 2

And in some tests it even beats the 465

WTF?

i can see this card being Nvids 5770 (i no it beats it) i just mean stick 2 of them togther and you have a monster just like the ATI's 5770.

hmm just goes to show just how weak the 465 is,i bet when overcloked this thing is very surpprising

just reading the good old hexus review of the 1gb version and the 768mb version, and uf them numbers are anywar near correct, then the 1gb version of this thing will be on par with a 1gb version on the 5870

(1920*1080 4AA)

also the 768mb version is between the 5830 and the 5850,even tho in the hexus review the 768mb 460 beats them both

all i can say is watch out ATI

5770? Dude I think you're missing the point. This thing competes with the 5850. Forget the 5770 and forget the 5830. It wipes the floor with both of them. Infact, it even beats the 465 on average and draws in on the 470.

Yeah I read a different review. I will, however, withold the right to be wrong as I know Nvidia are very selective about who gets to review their cards on release... If you know what I mean ;) ;) bend the truth *cough* ;) :)

It really does render the 465 a pointless piece of doo doo. I think they tried to rush out a card supposedly aimed for lower-to-mid range budget and ended up just making a cut-down 470 with the crap cooling to match.

This card actually makes me think of doing SLi like AMD suggested as according to the people bit-tech/Custom pc the 768<MB only drains a little more power than the 5830 and is ONLY 33C above room temp at LOAD! That's cooler than the 5770, 5830 and 5850!

This is actually quite staggering from NVidia. FINALLY a card for them to be proud of and at a good price.

Apparently the Zotac 1gb is far better than the 768mb versions. Not sure on price but it does use what looks to be a crappy blower heatsink assembly.

Just went to check Scan and realised they have no cards in stock from any one. Doh.

Time is running short for Nvidia to supply its starving masses. If they don't feed them soon then they will be gone and lost forever. I have read reports on how the 460 is going to be in short supply, I just hope that's wrong.

its just a shame the 768mb has such a cripled 128 buffer, hence the performance and hence the cost

hmm i am leaning to the gainward 1gb GLH,might sell me 5770 now

mind you at 1920*1080 the smaller buffer cant hinder that much, say £50 much lol

scan has a asus one instock 768mb

Get that 5770 Crossfired. With another one you will slaughter a 460 and spend less. The 128bit buffer does a lot less damage than people think tbh.

£127 for another 5770

£86 for a UD3P (i just like that board)

so £213 in total

were as now,i have a SLI board and nvid have a half decent card out out,and it destroys a 5770 even at stock

HA! It will be Mul aka Milind getting this one I think peeps. We should have had an EVGA sample last week but the wonder boys at RM seem to have 'lost' our package

You'll spend £13 less on a decent 1gb 460. Crossfired 5770 will beat the 460 hands down. You're above and beyond with it dude and knocking on the door of 5870 performance.

Still.. Let us wait for a honest to god OC3D review before you make your mind up. As I said, Nvidia can be awfully selective about who gets to review their cards.
