This appeared to have been very much on the quiet in my mind. I only found out by luck a couple of days ago that they were launching something new at all. Today it seems what we were waiting for was the GTX460.
Depending on the manufacturer you choose it's 5 numbers and 75 notes shy of its' slightly bigger brother making it kind of an oddball interms of pricing. If you follow the chain down in terms of where cards theoretically compete against each other then, 480 = 5870, 470 = 5850, 465 = 5830, and 460 = 5770.
Now form that angle it may seem that NVidia has tried to bring affordable gaming from the new 460 and indeed it almost has with prices starting at just £159 it may not seem a bad deal. More so when you look at the initial data release where at 1900x1200 / 4xAA / 16xAF, the GTX460 apparently outperforms the 5830 with an average of 30fps and 22fps respectively.
If you look at it from that point of view though, does it not seem that Nvidia has shot itself in the foot somewhat introducing a card that with more testing isn't probably that far below its' slightly bigger brother performance, yet nicer on the ears with better cooling being completely redesigned akin to the larger fan (and presumably 'F***ing huge great big bit of copper' eh Tom?
) on the ASUS EAH5870 V2 reviewed on here recently.
So overall, it seems ASUS have finally read the dictionary definition of 'Value for money' and released a card that performs pretty well and looks like it should be cooled better, whilst making the much more expensive and poorly cooled 465 seem a bad buy in anyones books. Discuss
