Nvidia GTX980Ti Review

i'm amazed by its power and truly am looking forward to a new SLI setup. Good thing i've got to wait till July to get back to work, makes it easy for me to play the waiting game and look at what AMD will bring ^^. The future is looking beastly!

EDIT : there is something i don't get in the review. Haven't watched any Titan X review but why does the X have more FPS than the OC in games?

Well its nice to see another very powerful card with great potential for overclocking. I'm sure a lot of people are going to be very happy with this, especially with a a better cooler or watercooling. For gaming at least, this is probably a better option tgan the TX, because of how far you can push this card. I won't talk about the price, because someone may feel offended :P

Probably some throttling, the reference cooler was not at 100%

just remember engines aren't dumb and neither are the programmers:p

No they aren't dumb but they are greedy and they are lazy. So they will continue to feed us the slop left over from the console game they make by using large chunks of it in PC games. That means we are running console textures, because let's face it they're not going to spend all of that time and money making custom textures for the PC for resolutions above 1080p.

I don't get why it is such a big deal what people buy.... It's their money end of story. It would be a different story if they were unsure of their purchase and was actually asking for opinions/advice.

Yup you're right it is their money but they shouldn't be so weak. As I mentioned before, a good, top end GPU a couple of years back cost around £350. The 5870 for example at launch was £320 or so. And that was the top end, big bad boy GPU.

Even the GTX 480 was 'only' around £400. And again, top end silicon highest end card you could buy. So how, in the space of around three years has that now gone to £960 for the top end GPU?

Let me tell you. Stupid names and stupid prices that, well you can do the math on the rest. That stupid people will pay.

Nowadays a mid range card costs around £200. And it's absolute crap and won't last six months.

And I have to admit dude I find it a little bit irritating. Mostly because people just can't control themselves or their spending. And this encourages GPU manus to take the WEE WEE more and more to the point where it's now at the point of being ridiculous and many people are not able to afford these high end cards.

What happened to turn and burn where you basically sell more products at lower prices with a smaller profit margin but you sell more so the end result is you make about the same amount of money?

It's all gone Apple. Tell me, do you like Apple? do you agree with their prices and so on? or I tell you what dude, how about Beats headphones. Do you think those plastic piles of toss are worth £300?

You know, back when I was 16 years old (so 25 years ago now) a Schumacher Cat radio controlled car, fully built and race ready was around £450 and up. Know what? I just built the equivalent of that for £350. So after 25 years due to higher sales and turn and burn I can now buy the same car for far less money, even twenty five years later. With all that inflation and so on it's actually cheaper.

I'm not having a go at any one here and I'm not being spiteful but what I am saying is just true.

Yup you're right it is their money but they shouldn't be so weak.

I'm baffled as to why you constantly have to belittle and insult people who want to spend their money their way, Calling people weak and saying you feel sorry for people who can't wait 3 weeks.

If you have to insult others to get your point across perhaps it's best you stop typing.

I'm not having a go at any one here and I'm not being spiteful but what I am saying is just true.

Well you are having a go at people, Needlessly I might add and with added insult.

^ ***... Vault-Tec, just drop it dude alright?... trust me, I've had dussen of this kind of discussions/arguements and safe to say, you aren't coming anywhere with it.

Maybe just might get yourself not liked around here if you keep continueing this nonsense regarding trying to make people change their mind and insulting people.

It doesn't belong here, so drop it and be happy... at the end of the day, if Dice or anyone else wants to drop a Donald Trump on a Titan X, then let them, it's not your own money is it?... so why even care in the first place, or even better... why even bother dude?... It's just plain simple pointless.

Saying your opinion on something is totally okay and legit, just don't cross that line between trying to force/make someone change their mind on something or insulting them while you're doing it mate and actually stating your opinion on something.

Well said dude.

Youre all on thin ice here right now. Watch your steps.

May I ask why exactly that those of us who don't want to be insulted should now have to fear an imminent ban or suspension because of 1 persons continuous insults ?

Insulting people based on their purchasing choices just aint cool.

You can form discussions and debates thats fine. But try and be nice about it.

Id agree that Vault should restructure the way he talks about certain things but there was no direct insult. In all honesty from the outside its like you and Shaun are just ganging up on him and trying to cause a row.

Im only here because 3 members have reported yours and Shauns replies.....

So Im here to say calm it down and dont let this escalate.

That's quite a dumb thing to say dude. That's so far from the truth it's insulting the whole PC industry tbh. I think you should take a Computer Science course or more specifically a Game Development course before you go around with that mindset. Being lazy won't get you through those courses. I'm soon to be qualified to take those courses, I can tell you that you couldn't be further from the truth about being lazy and i'm not even in it yet, you need to know a ton of math and have a extreme understanding of programming. I'm gonna agree with Tom here- you should restructure the way you argue things, such as this, because saying that is more or less rude to people who have a passion for it. And no I'm not insulting or trying to make this a big deal but here to ask you to cut down on this kind of tone as I am one of those people who have a passion for Game Development.

Ugh.

Whilst I understand that what I am saying can be construed as insulting behaviour I'm not going to relinquish my point.

It's a shame that people don't seem to understand where I am coming from but that is nothing new to me. Do understand this though I am insulting myself with the same breath.

I have three Titan Blacks. However, I've gotten to a point where I am starting to see sense again. IE - I am sick of paying rip off prices and it's my right to complain.

For every action there is a reaction, and so on. If me talking about the cause of this reaction is a problem then I suggest you look away, because it is just the truth.

So that's it. GPUs cost what they do today because they have been made a boutique product for show offs. And again, please do note the irony that I have owned several Alienware computers.

At no point have I outright insulted any one. I noted Tom mentioned the other day that whoever bought a Titan X would be a bit gutted by the release of the 980ti. Know what? that could be seen as insulting but you know what? it's the truth.

Sometimes the truth hurts but I'm not going to butter it up to make people feel better. I'm not going to go around patting people on the back for creating what I see as a huge problem.

I won't post in this thread any more.

I get what you are saying - it was all fine till the Titan and Nvidia utilised the goldilocks principle to make the 780 Ti look good value.

Both AMD and Nvidia did have mega expensive dual core cards though, Nvid were just the first people to charge a mint for that power on a single die.

Swings and roundabouts

Indeed but if people showed some restraint and voted with their wallets this problem would not exist.

Sake dude the amount of people who have rushed in and ordered the 980ti. Within an hour of them going live Gibbo said they had already sold 300. 300 ! for god's sake the 390x comes out in three weeks and even if you hate AMD's guts and want to see them bankrupt at least wait because the price of the 980ti will inevitably come down.

Honestly it's like watching bloody drug addicts and alcoholics. This compulsion....

Something snapped in me a few weeks ago and I've come to now. I won't be buying any of these new GPUs until I can get a pair for £500 or less. That's what they are worth to me.

I've done plenty of programming myself in Borland. But thanks for the lesson.

The Witcher 3 was in development for god knows how long. However long it takes to make a game, basically. It came out and it ran like turd on Kepler. Why?

I'll tell you why because they wanted their payday and basically left it to the point where they had to fix it after the fact. Why not just set up a few PCs and test it out? because that takes time and time is money. So they didn't bother, hence, I call them lazy. And I have every bloody right to after handing over the money for the game. Instead I have had to wait for Nvidia to fix the problem after the fact. How did they not even know it ran like crap on Kepler? it's their technology.

You keep on thinking what you like though. I know about optimisation and debugging and I tell you Witcher 3 is a pile of slop and should have been delayed until it was fixed.

You know? like Rockstar did with GTAV instead of releasing another bucket of slop (GTAIV).

Learning about it and then working in the environment is often very different. Being 'insulted' about your profession is also more common place too.

Its probably more a case of time then laziness. Especially if you work for the very big companies. Namely Ubisoft. Or EA to some degree. There are some products out there that are genuinely minimal effort though and they shouldn't be given slack no matter if its easy to make or hard to make.

Welcome for the lesson I guess? if you already know so much programming then why would it be a lesson? :p
You even said so before- agreed with me infact- It wasn't CDPR's fault for Kepler. That was Nvidia. So why turn around now on that? If you want to be mad be mad at Nvidia.. they fixed it quickly as well so don't see what that issue you have is with. There was no other issues with any other series of card, not even for me and i'm still on the first 7xxx series. I've not had any bugs. Thanks for telling telling me what I can think? Haha?? Thanks for ignoring my previous post about cutting down on the tone.. really you ignored it completely it seems. It doesn't effect me however so I'll just stop replying to you in this thread so we can move on.

It is common yes, unfortunately. It is time because Time is money- that applies to literally everything. Nothing is perfect true but neither are people and those people are creating them. You could make many cases of unpolished games that should have been pushed back. Ubisoft comes to mind first, the old EA used to be like that but their new CEO is really turning the company around. It's not really the devs though- it's the publisher's who don't extend their time because they don't want to lose money. You could probably argue that some devs put in minimal effort but i can't think of any specific examples.

Given that I consider this to be healthy, insult free debate I will answer you.

Who coded the game dude? was that Nvidia? no? didn't think so. When I use to code on an emulator project I would always compile the code and then send it out to testers who owned different rigs. So different CPUs, laptops, desktops you name it. Of course, at that time I had the fastest CPU on the market so of course it always ran very well for me. Then I could add optimisations like support for more than one CPU and so on.

Know what? if I didn't do that then I would just get endless complaints about it not running well on other people's rigs.

That was my software. It was coded by me, and, pretty much belonged to me. So I was responsible for it and making sure it ran well.

If I were in charge of a large company I would do the same thing. I would want to make sure that my game was not released until I had exhausted every effort on making sure it would run well and be well received.

LOL ! companies like EA crack the whip and treat their employees like crap and they release their game "on time" every time. Even when they're a broken, 30 FPS mess. You going to blame Nvidia for that too?

PC gaming is an absolute nightmare because it's a multi million dollar payday for a company like EA but they really don't want to put in the effort to make sure that it's going to run well. Why do you think these companies have a no return policy which makes it very hard to return their products?

Yup, time is money. And they can't be bothered putting in the time to take the money.

UBI, EA, meh. They're all the same. Money money money, big fat corporations who really don't care if their products are up to scratch. That's just fact again so why you were trying to argue it is just beyond me.

It would almost seem like you're only arguing just for the sake of arguing with me.....

Funny that !

Guys guys... I'm certainly not the best person to say this, but can we please get back on topic?

This thread has gone from 980Ti Review and talking about the 980Ti in general to argueing and a discussion about programming and game development. It doesn't belong in this thread lads.

So can we get back on track please?, pretty please? :)

I can start off by saying that even though I'm literally dying not to buy a 980Ti now, I'm waiting a bit for AMD to drop their flagship and hopefully I'll see some price drops on the 980Ti :)

Also, a question for you guys?... which one should I go for?, an reference design, ie ASUS or EVGA (most due to they include an SLI finger) or ASUS Strix card?...

There are plenty of games that were minimal effort. See every game that follows a big 'hype'. All those slender clones.

In terms of software there are many examples too.
