Nvidia GTX980Ti Review

Sweet. Now I at last have a viable upgrade plan :)

It would be foolish for me to buy now though, but, this will keep AMD in check with their prices (and the rumoured $749)

Maybe when winter comes back I will think about it again but for right now there's hardly any point for me given I run a 60hz monitor.

Actually can't believe it's as cheap as it is. Nice review Thomas will watch the video later :)

Maybe now's the time to finally move on from my long-serving GTX680's - great GPU's, especially a pair of them, but they are starting to feel a little dated. Just need to wait for 980Ti water blocks :)

Scoob.

A dumb question, but why still wait? :p... you might gonna go AMD fan boy? ^_^

Ooh I dunno, maybe AMD have a chance to release something good? Considering my 780Ti has been less than stellar I'd quite like to give myself a chance this time to not pick a card that ends up being useless (for my upgrade plans) 6 months later. If i had got a 290x I'd think I would only be considering changing case, as opposed to alot more. Ideally I'd not give Nvidia any more money as they're -insert descriptive expletive that sounds like punts- for the most part. Then again, it's pretty much a choice between evil (nvidia) and incompetent (amd).

Never buy a Nvidia card until the AMD equivalent is out as you'll get screwed over by the launch price. Atleast thats how it feels to me. the last three cards I've had I've not waited long enough, this time I'm not gonna mess up.

It's been confirmed that TX blocks will fit.

I read an article a couple of weeks ago. The guy who wrote it said If I were Nvidia I would be very worried. referring to HBM.

That may go some ways to explain why Nvidia decided to release first (because let's face it if the 390x was poxy they could have waited, then released the faster 980ti for more than £549) and why they decided not to wait.

I'm so glad I went for Titan Blacks now though. At £695 they weren't very cheap but for 60hz 4k they're still more than good enough so I can afford to sit back and wait for the price war to be over.

I usually hate everything that Nvidia do but I could bloody kiss them right now. Quite simply, AMD need to be in or around the £549 mark now to make sure their cards sell. Which flies in the face of the proposed $749 price tag being quoted a week ago. That would have actually been reasonable if the 390x can stand up to the TX, but now they have no choice.

Which is great if you're sitting on the fence like me. It simply makes my next upgrade a few hundred quid cheaper :)

Thing is though as I said I have a 60hz monitor and my TBs tend to run games between low 40s and locked 60 so there's no point spending a grand just to top that FPS range up to a constant 60 FPS, especially not with Gsync.

haha I must admit that did make me chuckle :D

Just a word of caution. Nvidia are a cut throat company who don't do any one any favours. This launch price of £549 has got me incredibly suspicious.

Why would they launch now? why not wait until the 390x is out then undercut it by £50? or, add the Nvidia tax and launch at the same price?

Nvidia know something we don't. And I would imagine it's how much of a difference HBM makes over standard GDDR.

Wait until AMD have released, this card can only get cheaper.

Not sure what you mean there dude, think you're either confusing me with someone else or that you just did a typo on "780's" instead of "980's" or "980Ti's"... as I don't have either of them, I have an 6950 :p

I was not trying to push AMD on you I was just trying to save you move money at a later date. Once AMD release the 3xx cards the prices of the 9xx cards might drop. If I did not feel like Nvidia's cards were to expensive and I dont want a Nvidia only market I would buy more Nvidia cards.

I think NVidia have just given their opinion on how well they think the new Fiji card will perform. They decided to release the 980 Ti with a cluster of cores disabled, if they saw the new AMD card as a real powerhouse they would have left all the cores enabled the same as the TX.

I am seriously tempted by 980ti in SLI, a worthy upgrade from my 780ti's. I know I should wait to see what AMD counter with, but if it's got that stupid radiator attached that just tells me they couldn't get the cooling controlled on air. Crossfire will be really awkward, almost impossible to install in my case. I also see graphic cards with pumps and radiators already attached as inelegant.

I would be watercooling my replacement cards as soon as possible so you could argue that the radiator of the 390X shouldn't matter as it'll be whipped off sharpish.

So I'll probably be going Nvidia again and if that means I lose out if AMDs next gpu is a monster, so be it. The advancements in Gsync will more than make up for it. I don't think that makes me a fanboy at all, just an enthusiast who has weighed up their options and made a decision. Maybe :).

Well said my friend, well said :)

Ok (watched yours first ofc, not only because it was the first in my subs list but also because you don't muck about when it comes to OC and the like) I have now watched 6 different reviews of the 980Ti, personally i am genuinely hopping with excitement to see what AMD are going to answer with. I am holding my choice of GFX upgrade with corresponding G/Free-sync monitor addition till all the facts are in.

Are you getting one Dice?

Why would I do that ? In most reviews apart from this one the Titan X comes out on top, Hell even in my own tests up against the OC3D scores I beat the 980 Ti's scores so why would I get one ?

I reckon they will bring out the 980 Ti 6GB Boost edition which will be the full GM200 core i.e the Titan X minus 6GB of memory.

Or maybe the silicon they are using it failed Titan silicon and they had to cut the cores?

Thing is Kaap there is still plenty of stock for Titan X and no doubt they are still being made. I will say though that right now they are competing with, well, themselves and they just made their big boy card totally irrelevant.

Silly sods. Maybe if they'd left DP in the Titan X I wouldn't be loling so hard.

Plums.

So you obviously didn't see the picture of Asus' triple fan Strix card?

Sorry mate but it just sounds like you're trying to talk yourself into making a mistake.

Three weeks. Is it really so hard to wait three weeks, maybe five when the price wars begin.

Remember this, £550 is still an utter pisstake for a graphics card.

Anyone who actually games for extended periods of time on a Titan X will tell you they see over 6GB easy in certain games at 4K ergo they didn't make they "Big boy card" irrelevant.

I've noticed the people who coin that moronic phrase are always the ones who either just do a few tests, Never game or simply don't have one and as tom himself has said many times he does not game, He runs tests and that's it.

They only use that much VRAM because the drivers are programmed to use it. I've never seen anything at max settings with msaa use more than 4.2gb and that's with 6gb vram.

The new consoles have 8gb ram total. 2gb of that is system reserved and the other 6gb is fair game. Not one single PC game I've seen yet is 4k. What I mean is there's not a single game out there that I've seen that has full on 4k textures. And the reason is that 99% of the buying audience either has a 1080p console or is running anything but 4k. It will be years and years before we see real, true 4k games.

As such anything you run at 4k is purely upscale from the texture cache. So you would have awful trouble causing a memory overload given that the games are designed with a 6gb limit. Now granted, MSAA and other PC technologies use up extra VRAM but there are no console games designed to push the limits yet, that will take time.

Now with all due respect you really shouldn't have bought that Titan X. The 980ti makes it a very expensive laughing stock. You could have almost bought two 980tis.

I'm not being nasty dude I'm just stating facts.

Me? I'm not buying bugger all until the petulance is over and done with, and the price war that's going to ensue. When the dust has settled I will jump in, but I absolutely assure you the 980ti won't cost no £550 in July..

Buying now is crazy.

I know dude not against you at all :)

A nicely overclocked TX against a nicely overclocked 980 Ti based on many benchmarks and tests does do up to 5-9% better and that last 5-9% is always were the wallet stingers are at.

Remember the 8800GTX and 8800 Ultra ? Same thing here ^_^

Vault-Tec, it seems like you are indrectly trying to talk Dice into believing he made a mistake with purchasing his Titan X :p... he hasn't returned it for a reason you know ;)

Myself though?.... I'm totally sold on the 980Ti, so gonna get it :)

Exactly and i still have nigh on 1 week to return it but I'm not going to because from my own tests against OC3D's I beat the 980 Ti scores so there would be no point in me returning it.
