Nvidia GTX 580 - is it worth it, what should i upgrade to?

Hey guys,

Im looking to upgrade my graphics card. I currently have a XFX ATI 5770

I was going to get the GTX 480, but then AMD announced the 6000 series cards and now Nvidia have release their GTX 580 cards.

I heard that the GTX 580 is an improvement over the GTX 480. I do quite a bit of gaming, video editing, photo shop and CAD work.

So my question is which card should i get and why?

I think OC3D will have their GTX580 review up tomorrow. Maybe that will help your decision. Personally I'd say wait a bit for prices to die down as all the 580's are above MSRP.

I kind of had an inklin this was coming. 470 GTX is now £10 more than a 1gb 460.

Two 470 GTX are now £330 and will absolutely wipe the floor with a 580 GTX.

Faster than a 580 I know that much.

The 1gb 460 in SLI would trade blows with a 580. The 1.2gb 470 SLI will win hands down.

Let's put it this way. A 5970 is a downclocked set of 5870s. A 470 trades blows with a 5870. Dual full fat 470s will highly likely beat a 5970 and it has been shown that the 5970 beats the 580.

I won't be SLIing mine any time soon. My PSU isn't macho enough and my CPU would bottleneck something that fast any way. However at £330 it is also very cheap. Nice part is even though they are shown and listed as OCUK value cards they're not. They're Point of View and IMO one of the better looking 470s on the market. It will be noisy, but it will also make plenty of speed to justify the noise. And the £70 saving to go faster will kind of offset that noise.
