Noctua NH-D14 Intel i5 2400 High Idle Temps

I've just put together a rig with an Intel i5 2400 95watt 3.1ghz and a Noctua D14 on an Asus P8P67 Pro Rev 3, inside a Fractal Arc Midi. But I'm experiencing, what I believe to be high idle CPU temps. The CPU temp in the BIOS is between 34-36C. I think voltage is around 1.1volts, and I have the fans on the Noctua, and 5 fans inside the case all running at 12volts.

I'm a relative novice builder, this is only my second rig, but 36C, at idle, in the BIOS, surely something has to be wrong???? My Core2Duo running at 1.34volts is only 28c, at this very moment!

I've seated the sink twice, and even reaplied the Noctua thermal compound the old fashioned way, by spreading it thinly over the CPU, but still the temps wont go lower than 34?

Does anyone know if the Noctua paste has a "burn in" time? (Their website is very vague on the subject) And if so how long is it?

Also has anyone out there had to RMA a Noctua coz of defective pipes etc?

Any help would be very very welcome.

When you're in the bios - I think the chip is running at its turbo speed? Try and use something like HWMonitor by CPUID from within the OS & see what temps you get then.

It does seem a bit high though as my 2500K runs at about that temp @4.4 & 1.315v

It shouldnt be running in turbo speed?, I have the EPU (Powersave) switch ON, and the Turbo switch OFF on the motherboard. As for HWMonitor, I'm so concerned by the idle temps, that I don't want to even install Windows yet. Putting the processor under a whole heap of load for what will be the best part of and hour during install doesnt seem like a good plan

I'm worried that I might have and issue with the actual heatsink itself, ie cracked heatpipes or something?

dont worry about the idle temps... my water loop idles @ 40 ish and loads at 45... nothing to worry about

i dunno how your going to get a defective heat pipe i would say stop being a little girl and wait for the load temps before you start kicking up a fuss

If you're that concerned you can try putting the stock cooler on it... 36 isn't high.

I'm being a "little girl" as you put it because, it's not my system, im putting it together for someone else, and they have paid for all the parts, so I don't want to fry their CPU. Surely it's better to er on the side of caution, especially when it's not your own property on the line.

And with regards to the cracked pipe issue, it could easily have been damaged in transit, the whole box must of weighed 20kilos.

just chill man, the chips can take up to double that without breaking a sweat

I don't think it will go much lower than that, my 2500k at stock was running about 34c idle with the noctua

Having done some quick research it looks like there is a cpu load of between 40-80% when in the bios. So you should get lower temps at idle in Windows.

I've just installed Windows, and got HWMonitor running. The CPUTIM is 60C!!!!

To me that is way way too high.

Yep a 2400 with a D14 on it at idle should run late 20's to early 30's depending on ambient. When you take the D14 off can you see where it has made contact? Have you tried the stock cooler?

I'd personally see about rma'ing the processor not the noctua. Sounds like a dodgy chip pal.

It seems that HWMonitor/Winbond, cannot work properly with the ASUS P8P67 Pro Rev 3 motherboard, and gives false temp readings. A friend who has the same board has similar problems, his CPUTIN temp is 0 c and his AUXTIN is 800c, yes 8 hundred! lol Clearly thats not an accurate reading.

He has a 2500k, and has been running it at 4.4gigs for months with no problems.

I am currently on the new rig, and the ASUS temperature monitoring software says my CPU is currently running at 21C

I've put it under some load running a few different programs, over the last 6 hours, and it barely broke into the low 30's

Had Prime95 running now for 70minutes ASUS temperature sensor reports CPU is currently 31C HWMonitor says my CPUTIN is 127C ???? but cores are as follows #0 28c #1 31 #2 29 #3 31

All Prime tests passed!

in HWmonitor, my pc says 60c right across the cpu wether ive justed started it or ran it for an hour at full load, i go by the individual core temps it gives, and yes it glitches out sometimes and displays 127c for me too

are those the temps under full load?

Under full load at 4.3ghz for me i get in the 55's region

Those core temps were taken while Prime95 was running, so I guess it was under load. I'm no expert on Prime95, I just chose "Torture Test" and set it on something called "Maximum CPU Heat", let it run for over and hour, then took the readings.

I had the BIOS set to "Power Save" mode, and the motherboard EPU switch ON
