Noctua D14 in Corsair 550D, is it a good idea?

what do you think, this is a midi tower (corsair obsidian 550D), and the D14 is so big .., i want to make a silent pc thats why i want to buy this case and this cooler without installing more fans , rear and top of the case, do you reccoment it?

thanks

do you have the case? i've seen one review that says despite the 179mm of room, the so-called "release mechanism" of the door means that the effective max cpu cooler height on the case is actually 160mm on the dot. that's the exact height of the nh-d14, so technically it should fit...

i'm a fan of winging it ^^. i'd do it. it's not even like the case itself is too small, there's just a piece of plastic in the way. even if it doesn't fit by a millimetre, i'm sure you can figure out a way

hm i haven't buy this case yet, but i ll do in next 2 weeks, when the ivy will be available in my country, i don't know if it fits or not but i don't if it has the same results in such a small room.. is it better to go to a solution like the H60? i m not going to oc my pc

That would work very well for your system.

if you're not overclocking AT ALL, then the ivy lineup is cooler than the sandys afaik. even if you overclock the 3570k for example to 4.2/4.4 (about the max without upping voltage), the temps stay very reasonable. it's only when you overvolt that it gets a bit ridiculous.

since you asked for recommendations, i would recommend not spending the money on such a beast cpu cooler if you plan to keep speeds at stock. i'd also buy a non "k" chip, so that you pay less for the same performance. i'd then buy a cheaper cooler like the hyper 212, or stick with the stock cooler, depending on how hot your country gets

. might even be adequate for a moderate (non-voltage increased) overclock!

i'd only get a premium cooler if i were getting a "k" chip and planning to go to 4.5 or so (on a 3570k), although even then the IBs don't actually output a lot of heat, they just get hot because they can't transfer heat very well to the IHS past a certain voltage. essentially hyper 212 is a very good choice for the IBs.

disclaimer - this is all based on experiences and reviews i've read.

thanks for the answer, i m thinking also the H60 watercooling solution replacing the fan with one or two nf-f12 which is more silent, my only doubt is the airflow inside the case , cause i dont plan to add any other fan for taking the hot air outside the case.. what do you think?

if you want to stick with the h60, then afaik you'll be fine with airflow because the h60 takes heat off the cpu and kicks it right out of the case. the rest of the airflow in your case probably won't matter too much in terms of heat. even if it mattered, the 3 stock fans on the 550d are enough to keep a stock IB cool, going by reviews. i think you'd be fine with a stock ivybridge with pretty much any ok cooling setup. if dell made a pc with an IB, the system would have probably one 120mm fan not including the PSU. not saying throw away two of your fans but you get the picture

P.S for the record, my 3570k runs at 30 degrees idle (memtest86+) using the stock cooler, and with no other fans. case is open (just testing two sets of ram atm). room is neither hot nor warm. take that as you will. i'm sticking a premium cooler on it, but only because i have one lying around

it really depends on the motherboard and CPU socket location.

duke is right, you might wanna start off with stock and monitor your temps and buy the solution that works

to move the temps back to a normal level. rather than undoer/over buy product you might not need.
