Hi guys, just purchased and installed an NH-D14 cooler but not sure where in the y-split i put the UNLA noise reduction adapters.

The instructions says the following... Caution, Never use one adapter for both fans by putting it before the y-split cable.

Where it says never "before", surely they mean never after the split? Confused, do I put the adapters on each lead of the fan then place those onto the y-split? To me that is putting them on before the y-split, perhaps someone could clarify, cheers.

before means bestween the motherboard and the splitter as power come out the mb than goes to that splitter, so its mb->Y-splitter->2resistors-> fans

Cheers, that now makes sense.

And my personal opinion about the cooler, well tbh it hasn't wowed me as much as I thought it might.

I had a freezer Pro 7 rev 2 on there before, idle was 27c on an E8600 Duo, I get exactly the same idle temp on the NH-D14 with fans at 1200 rpm, the freezer pro was 900 rpm.

On the plus side, prime 95 temp is lower, about 10 degrees lower.

However, I have a cosmos S case, a pretty big case, one that has a big fan on the side and with it on you can't close the case because the cooler's too tall, had to take the fan off.

Northbridge temp is about the same, 45c, but southbridge has risen by 6 degrees from 40 to 46. Perhaps because there's now no side fan.

I also had to move the corsair DDR2 ram.

So if I had the choice again, would I bother again with such a large cooler? Doubt it, maybe it's ok if you overclock a lot, certainly showing lower temp on loads. But as I generally run things at close to normal clocks, then I'm not seeing much difference on idle.

What I was expecting was an idle of say 23c, then I'd have been impressed, but 27c is the same as I had on the freezer pro 7 rev 2.

I know what you mean, and now its almost £70. It's about time something else came along and gave it a good kicking...

After some fiddling around with the top exhaust fan and front intake, I managed to get the temps down a bit for mb+nb+sb.

Basically I noticed the top exhaust fan wasn't making the slightest bit of difference with it on or off, so took it off, then moved the front cage holding the hard drive and fan up a few inches so it's more in the middle rather than at the bottom. Then put the former exhaust fan on the bottom which is now an intake fan, it's standing up and not really fastened, there's a big thick wire stopping it from falling, yeah not elegant but just a temporary solution till I find some kind of thing to fasten it.

Now the southbridge is 38-39, and motherboard temp is 35, improved 5 degrees but think pre nh-d14 it was 32 but at least better than 40 now. Expect with better fans that could improve.

I got a sort of 3 fan combo, the 120mm sucks it in (NF-P12), then the P14 in the middle helps it on its way and its exhausted by another P14. Works quite nicely too

It wouldn't really help me adding a 3rd fan to the cooler, 27c is fine but not what I was expecting, the problem I had was not enough air getting to various parts of the MB since fitting the NH-D14, the removal of the side fan on the cosmos S case made temps rise, and with the cooler being so large it's blocking a lot of the airflow on the Rampage formula board.

I'm looking at getting another 2 cages for the case if they're still available, that will make fitting extra fans easier, unless there's some other bodge way of getting fans to fit on the cosmos S at front.

***I've since managed to get the big 200 fan back into the case, it's not attached to the side panel though, done with fiddling now. Unless my next motherboard is huge, I won't be using this cooler again. It's good at cooling the cpu on load but the downsides are too many for me.

its all about your room temp, if you had water cooling i dont think that will drop, as much, air only can cool soo much. so thats why they both idled at 27c, you only really see how good the noctua is, is when you pump up the pressure and overclock the cpu. it brought down my temps by 20-25c for my my amd.

my cpu idles at 32c and on the stock cooler it idled at the same.

What are your mobo temps? Mine are about 27, and that stays pretty much constant, but I have 3 exhaust fans (all 140mm) around the top and left side of the motherboard, maybe that draws away heat. Of course some motherboards are hotter than others, so maybe your next build will have a cooler running motherboard.

Speaking of downsides, I really can't find any :/ Of course its big but then so is my case I guess.

Motherboard temp is 35, that's gone up since I put the cooler in. Used to be around 28.
