New Windows Install Freezes

Trying to install widows on a friends new PC and widows install freezes randomly. The mouse just stops working. It was worse until ai pulled out the video card and then it made it to the installation Progress screen and eventually froze.

Why could this be?!

Also, it gets a warning saying CPu fan error. But it's plugged in and powered. Help.

Have you checked that all the cable connectors are tightly fitted to their respective header/outlets? Did you also check the BIOS to make sure the system info section was properly set up with the fan power settings? Also double check that the video card's PCI bracket and the IO shield isn't touching any circuitry/motherboard. I've found that sometimes the folded tabs around the USB openings on the IO shield can touch the USB circuitry or the port itself and can cause shorts.

Corsair hydro series, preapplied. And installing to SSD. Also, made through install now at starting windows for the past hour. Rebooted, said finishing install, starting windows, frozen again.

I'm guessing you've set the SATA mode to AHCI in BIOS before installing Windows? Did you extract the necessary SATA/Intel chipset drivers onto another USB you could use for driver setup during the Windows installation? You're running the system on default settings?

Please elaborate. I have no idea what any of the above means.

go into bios and set the sata mode to achi thats whats required to install on an ssd and have trim working properly (well not just trim but other shite as well) Also you say you get a cpu fan error go into bios and look at ther hardware monitoring area and set it to the min speed or off if possible that should clear that up

With SSDs, it's most likely you'd run them in AHCI mode for non RAID system. Usually when you're installing XP, you'd have to use a Floppy to update the install with the necessary AHCI/RAID drivers during setup. By default WIndows 7 should have the Microsoft AHCI driver, but I think it depends on your motherboard whether or not it needs additional drivers to be installed during the Windows 7 installation.

You're installing Windows 7 on a stock system right? Nothing has been OC-ed?

Will do, Thanks!

Yes its stock. Basically the same rig as mine, minus the SSD.

P8Z68-V Pro, 2600K (stock), 16 gb Vengeance... I'll try changing those settings and get back to you. But for now, is there anything else I can do?

My first corsair SSD was unstable until it died. Screen frooze and bluescreens, so it all sounds familiar. After you set it to ahci and get that cpu fan error fixed, and if its still unstable, i bet it could be the SSD. The SSD might be near breakingpoint, or it could need a firmware update that might fix it.

If you have a regualr HHD, you could try and install w7 on that. If the system is still unstable, then the problem is something else, and not the SSD.

The MB your using has AHCI mode as default? my MB had that. So it isnt the ahci thats making it unstable.

So, I don't have to change anything? I should just work?

Must be the SSD then. Im also going to try another copy of Windows 7... the one I was using was scratched.

Yup you should be fine. If you have another system around, you could also try updating the SSD's firmware if possible. Then, try reinstalling Windows 7 afterwards. Oh the disk is scratched? That could be another factor too.

Tried another, the install got to "completing installation" and stayed there for an hour. I rage quit and restarted. Installed fine on my regular HDD. Any ideas? I don't want it to be dead.

Could it be the hot swap connector? Should I try the Sata to SSD directly!

Yup, that would be a good idea. You can try connecting the SSD directly to the motherboard's 1st SATA port. Is the HDD yo used to test the install in the same system as the SSD? You could try updating the firmware as well before reinstalling the OS onto the SSD.

So it worked fine on a normal hdd? sorry to hear that, but then it must be the SSD. I would just contact seller and RMA it. Dunno if you break warranty if you update it, but most likely you do. so i think a RMA is best. Or ask suport first.
