New to folding at home

Hi guys,

I want to Fold as well. I don't have parts lying around to make a dedicated F@H rig so i thought i would use my main rig. I'm new to this so i apologize if i ask any nooby questions.

My main question is that do you have to keep the rig on 24/7 like you would with a server or can you fold whenever you switch the computer on? Reason is that im not always on the computer but would love to fold when i switch the rig on.

Also which programs do i have to get to start folding?

That's all questions i have for now, maybe more down the line.

Thanks guys

You don't have to leave your PC on 24/7, but it will get you more points. I use my main rig as well as other rigs for folding, all 24/7.

Easiest way to get started is with FAH Tracker.

I got another questions, how does PPD and total PPD work? They numbers change frequently, is there anything i should look out for?

I have got a i7 920 and a ATI 5870. Im folding on both.

For the Cpu, i selected "use multi-core CMP client" and "use all CPU cores, for the GPU i have selected "enable GPU0", "GPU3 client" and in the force GPU selection I chose "ATI 600"

Are my settings correct? I did follow the guide they have but i just want to make sure

Also is the anything else i need to configure?

Thanks

You'll probably get a better PPD if you don't run the 5870 as it cripples the CPU/SMP Client when they run side by side (it's an ATi issue :/ )

EDIT: Oh, and get a PASSKEY and add it to the Tracker. Then enable Advmethods on the SMP/CPU Client for the first 10 work units. Once they've completed successfully and on time, disable Advmethods and enabled BigAdv instead.

i have disabled GPU folding and enabled Advmethods on the CMP/CPU Client. Where do I check the first 10 work units and see if they have been completed?

He said he doesn't always leave his computer on 24/7, so I don't know if -bigadv is a good idea in this case..

I had a look on the readme and it did say -bigadv is for 24/7 use so i wont need to check that.

One other question, how do i get a stats bar to go in my sig? i cant find the number you need to replace at the end of the link

just to throw my newbicity cap into folding, i do a bit of folding now and then (have to keep an eye on the electric bill), my GPU folds like a dream, but when i fold on my CPU my CPU gadget monitor say im only using 25% of it capacity. shouldnt be a 100% like if was was running a Prime95 Stress test

big writing a screen shots when explain please

Thanx in advance

Are you using the -smp flag? Sounds like you have a quad core CPU and it's only using one core while folding.

not sure, i will have a look when i get home. what do i need to look for? sorry for my complete newbicity in all this

If you are using GPU Tracker then it's a simple checkmark in the configuration page. If you are using the plain console client, you have to create a shortcut to F@H and add the -smp flag in the target box. IE "C:\fah\fah.exe -smp"

thanx man. i added -smp to the shortcut but it wasnt happen so i have just downloded the GPU tracker, read the folding thread here and now and now everything running a max
