New Project - Nanaki V2

My main rig got fried by lightning so I am on the hunt for new parts.

(How do I upload pics?)

That's what I am looking at, plus some custom spray painting of my own on the side panels and window (or a custom vinyl for the window at least).

The H105 is a placeholder until I find out whether I can mount it in the back section. A 3rd HDD (Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3) will be migrating from my current rig as a place to store unimportant stuff and cloned drive images.

I will of course be documenting the full build with pics for you all. Any suggestions or edits?

You can upload images by pressing copying the 'direct' code in the right hand menu on the PhotoBucket page. You then wrap that link between
insertimage.gif
button for that. I fixed this one for you :)

I'd recommend swapping out the Seagate drives for a couple of Caviar Blues (or Green if it's just for storage. Also, no SSD?

I'd also recommend looking at a different 290x as the Asus one is a bit of a pain and can run warm with ease.

I will be migrating the SSD's from my current rig. The Seagates are there to save a bit of cash compared to the WD's. I had thought about Toshiba's, but I saw some pretty bad reviews. One will be for expanding my storage capacity ("Uncle Torrence"), and the other will be for game storage. SSD is a Force GT 120GB, and my older one for BF4 (OCZ Vertex 2 60GB).

Edit - I had 2 x 1TB drives full of stuff, so a minimum of 2 x 2TB for the new drives

Given the next-to-no difference between the 290 and 290X under real world conditions, I have rolled that back to a 290, still a DCII although I am open to other brand suggestions (preferably with an aftermarket cooler). I am kind of in need of a speedy build - lightning killed most of the rest of my stuff and I only have access to one physical store that has good service and prices at the moment. Just waiting on an insurance claim and I have a wedding to pay for too.

I am in Australia, and we get what we call the "Australia Tax" where certain tech is way overpriced compared to elsewhere. it's already a little over budget, but I can just drop the LED strips until later on (can make do with a 10cm Red CCFL from the dead rig).

Edit - speeling due to not wearing my glasses

Toshiba drives are really solid these days.
If you can get your hands on a Sapphire tri-x 290 that would be the a good choice. They're much better performers.

The Toshiba 2TB would save me another few bucks or so each, sadly the Tri-X is out of stock. I have heard good things about the MSI Gaming version though.

Edit - Mocked up a new list based on a few changes. Not feeling particularly comfy with the Toshibas though.

I have settled on a final build list. It's a little more expensive than my previous shopping lists but it also allows me to retire my 60GB OCZ Vertex SSD which is easily past time to be put to bed.

I won't bother embedding a new pic - I'll just list the parts in text.

  • CPU:
    4790K
  • Motherboard:
    Maximus VII Hero
  • RAM:
    16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro (Red) 2400MHz 11-13-13-31
  • GPU:
    MSI R9 290 Gaming
  • Storage:
    2 x 120GB Samsung EVO's in RAID0
    2 x 2TB Toshiba's (non-RAID)
Moving my 120GB Force GT SSD to replace the 60GB Vertex as the Battlefield etc drive
  • Case:
    NZXT H440 Red/Black
  • PSU:
    Corsair RM750
  • Cooling:
Corsair H105 with 4 x SP120 Performance Editions in push/pull (pointless mostly but for the looks)
1 x AF140 Red LED fan for rear exhaust and 2 x SP140 Red LED fans for the roof.
Some NT-H1 TIM because I found out the AS5 I had lost the lid and is now rock hard in the tube.
  • Extras:
12cm BitFenix Alchemy Red LED strip
If I can fit it without it looking balls, my Red CCFL (10cm)

All parts except the LED fans will be purchased from Umart. The fans will come from PCCaseGear unless Umart starts stocking them before next Monday.

g0t.w00t The best configuration for the Corsair series of all in ones is to have SP's in push and AF's in pull, LinusTechTips did an exhaustive test a while back and it proves to be a lot better than 4 x SP's if only by 1-2'c at best but it's still the best option.

So in short it would be a better idea to change it to 2 x SP's and 2 x AF's :)

I will have a look for that test, but I am easy to swap and change parts like that now. Cheers for the info :)

Here you go mate :)

Again it's only 1-2'C difference but seeing as you live in a country that mimics the sun every little helps ;)

a country that mimics the sun

You have that right! Especially in Queensland, the state that I live in. Thankfully I moved out of the crater of a town I was born in and live closer to the coast now for a sea breeze.

Edit - Probably pedantic, but I have never even used an AIO before so radiators are alien to me. I always OC'd on air using my modded NH-D14. With the fact that the NZXT H440 is a little restrictive (not massively, but that vent is quite small) how would SP>Rad>AF under that circumstance? Any ideas?

Yeah, I get pretty anal about the minor details once I have sorted out the major components.

The parts are now ordered. Doing a happy jig all over the house as I have been able to go a little better than I first thought.

I will be trying to put together a passable build log for posting here, so stay tuned for the build within the next week.
