New GPU

Hey I am planning to get a new GPU for christmas. I am thinking of selling my HD5850 to go towards funds for a new GPU.

Question...

How much is my used 5850 with full retail packaging worth?

Thanks!

I would search around see how much others are selling there used cards for then go from that, but i would imagine for about £100-£125 unless you overclocked the socks off it

as for a new gpu i would look at getting a GTX570 best price/performance or maybe a 6950/6970 for amd stuff.

Edit: also it will depend on whether its the 1gb version or the 2gb one

Not bad at all. I will post it on a local community website which attracts thousands each day from the area. Might post it here too. Thanks!

What im scared of from selling online as they may claim its faulty if they damage it when installing it or if they don't like it. :S

Yer, i guess depending on where you sell it you can check out the buyers profile and history of stuff they bought see if they look trusted

i guess its just luck, most people that would be buying a expensive graphics card will have some sense i guess!

Well I was looking it up and this type of scamming has gone viral on ebay for electronics.

Well if they do damage it from installing it how will they know it was their fault?

Even if they know they damaged it they will still tell lies to the seller. They will most likely try to get their money back.

Alternitaivly you could put in a local ad or paper maybe even gumtree. Then you can meet the guy in person, and stalk him to his house and then go batter him if he trys to get his money back

If you're worried about scammers there are some things you can do (or, things that I would do)

1. Before completing the sale have them agree to your own personal terms and conditions which state "No refunds". Of course this would likely scare off legitimate buyers who think you're a scammer, but hopefully provision 2 and 3 would put them at ease and assure them that this is a formality to protect YOU from scammers.

2. Offer to have them come collect it from your home or, should they not live too far away, offer to go to their home and help them install it. If they come to yours you can show them the card working in your system then hand it to them knowing it works, if you go to them you can be sure that if it DOESNT work on their system when you get there it wasn't their fault

(excluding obvious technical problems such as them not having the right PSU etc)

3. Should the above not be possible, and just for good measure even if it is, film (if you can) and document the working condition of the card before you remove it, the removal process and posting it. This way you can assure them, and perhaps any authorities should anything go wrong, that when the card left you it was in working condition.

4. Money first, then you post the card/Cash at pick up. Don't send them anything till the money is in your possession.

Hope that helps!

What I do when selling things on Ebay is in the description I say something like

"The (insert name of item/s) has been fully tested and is in full working order. If the item arrives to you damaged or a fault occurs after you have received the item l will not issue any refunds as the (insert name of item/s) is in a used condition and does not come with any warranty. Please also note that all item/s are security marked and serial numbers recorded to prevent fraud"

If you state it in the description even if they open a case against you it will go in your favor because you have stated that there are no refunds given making it part of the terms and conditions of the sale.

You can also mark the listing as no returns accepted in the part where you make the listing.

Also, like others have said, until you have the money in your Paypal, Bank account etc don't post the item.

OK - that's pretty obvious - but what are these scammers actually doing? Getting the item and then saying it doesn't work and then asking for the money back?

Some people will buy an item, say a GPU like in this case that they already have that is broken, buy yours, swap it with theirs and then try to get their money back by saying the one they bought from you is faulty but really the one they are trying to send back and get their money back for is the one they originally had that is broken.

I think that's the one people are on about in this thread anyway or just on about people who will buy it decide they don't like it and then try and get their money back.

Even though I consider myself as a sceptic I'm obviously still far too trusting - there are some devious buggers out there aren't there.

There are quite a few scammers out there I think Ruthless has been scammed a few times on Ebay this year.

Thanks for the advice guys! I am seeing 5850 1Gb's selling for £95 on ebay. Pretty much all auctions i am seeing have 5 or more bids already on them so i guess they sell like hot cakes

.

Yeah I think the serial numbers and UV pen are a brilliant idea.

The prices for 2nd hand vid cards is bonkers. I saw a HIS reference 6950 go for £200 + £10 P&P this morning.

Yeah they go quickly. At Christmas time when I get my new card I will try OC3D and if it doesn't sell I will try ebay.
