New build - Advice needed.

Hi All,

Looking into building a new rig as I've had mine for 4-5 years and I think it's time for an upgrade.

See my build below, let me know if anything isn't combatable (it's been awhile since I've built/looked into hardware) and let me know if I've missed anything.

Asus SABERTOOTH Z77 Socket 1155

Intel Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz

EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2048MB GDDR5

Corsair 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 1866MHz Vengeance

Corsair Professional Series AX750 750W Modular PSU

Seagate 2TB BARRACUDA 3.5" SATA-III Hard Drive -

Samsung SH-222BB 22x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive - OEM Black

Noctua NH-U12P

I have a Kingston SDD already and a soundcard which I'll be transferring over. Also looking into a Lian Li case (but any recommendations are welcome) with some after market fans.

I have a BenQ monitor and keyboard/mouse is already sorted.

Is the NH-D14 significantly better? I thought that their might be an issue with the RAM and the size of the CPU cooler.

NH-D14 is one of if not the best air cooler
For gaming I suggest i5 3570k, more than adeguate, and invest on gpu
For one GPU only setup, AX650, if you plan crossx or sli in future then ax750/ax760i or >
For the case, your taste? elegant? gaming *bling bling* oriented? silence? airflow?
RAM way too much, 8GB you are fine
MB something from msi (Z77A-GD** series)

Go for the MSi MPower motherboard (much nicer than sabertooth), a 3570k, 8gb Ram, stick with AX750 if you want to upgrade in the future, if not AX650. Perfect gaming system. For case, I'd suggest a 500r. Oh, and with that much cash saved you could pick up an H100.

Thanks for the help so far. I'm not entirely sure if I'll SLI in the future as it always seemed overkilled for what I need it for.

As for case, I like minimalism and preferably black but would be interested in other block colours. My issue is I don't think the Noctua fans will go with a black case.

Also, I am not too interested in water cooling.

hey mate just a heads up. the 670 ftw can get hot and loud really fast. mine is like a freaking jet turbine on AC3 with only a 40mhz offset on the core and 300 on the mem so it wasnt a big boost but by flip it gets toasty and loud. just something to think about. the only reason i can see for the ftw is potential WC ability as its the same pcb as the ref 680 if you aint gonna wc id recommend something with a proven cooler like the frozr

Thanks for that Sparkle. I was wondering about the heat from the FTW, I was drawn to it due to cheaper price and free games! :) I'll take this into account.

As for the motherboard, the MSI Z77 is looking pretty good! Cheaper than the Sabertooth.

You could have a look at some of these cases:

- Corsair Obsidian 550D or 650D
- Fractal Design Define R4
- Cooler Master Silencio 550 or 650
- Bitfenix Shinobi
- Corsair Graphite 600T or 600TM (with mesh in the sidepanel)
- Silverstone Raven RV03

Those are the best clean looking cases I could come up with. If you don't need silence, you can skip the Corsair 550D, and CM Silencio cases.

EDIT; My 670FTW is not terribly noisy. Yes, it does have a reference cooler design and yes a DirectCU II or Twin Frozr card would be more quit, but it personally doesn't bother me. It does run pretty hot, but I've never been able to get it higher then 65 on a game :)

if you are from the uk bro scan have the msi 670 power ed for about £1.20 cheaper and the free game promo is nvidia wide not just vendor wide so you would get borderlands 2 (amazeballs) and AC3 free still if you get in there before the deal ends

Thanks for this. I am unsure if I'll be placing the order before then, it's looking middle of the month for when I get paid.

I'll take in the options at the time. Seems I am settled on a 670. :)

I suggest Define R4 / Obsidian 550D for sleek, elegant, noise optimized case
Or Carbide 500R for more airflow while maintaining elegant traits

to be fair even though mine seems to have been born in the firey pits of the underworld its a freaking trooper. i run hitman maxed at 2560x1440 witout a single stutter. also @feronix whats your oc settings because mine hits 81-83 on ac3. not that i can copy but just to see in relation to mine what you are hitting. cheers bud

Not a fan of 550D or 500R unfortunately.

Arc Midi is looking like the best at the moment. I was wondering a Lian Li case, as I've always wanted one. Too much you reckon?
