Hi all,

I currently have two LGA2011 builds (i7-3820 and i7-3930K) and thus I find myself looking at AMD for the next build (Kind of bored of Intel atm). So I would like your advice on how the following build will perform across the games listed below;

League of Legends, EvE Online, Defiance, Rome II, Guild Wars 2, FFXIV, Elder Scrolls 'Skyrim', BF3, BF4 and Elder Scrolls Online (when it comes out)

CPU: AMD FX-8350
Mobo: Asus AMD990FX Crosshair Formula-Z
Heatsink: H100i
RAM: 16GB Patriot Viper Gen 3 Black Mamba 2400MHz
HDD: Samsung 840 EVO 256GB SSD
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
GPU: R9 290X or two Asus R9 280X M-P in CrossfireX
PSU: Corsair AX1200i
Case: Corsair Carbide 540 Air or 900D

Thanks,

solid build mate, but as barnsly said one card over two for sure.also that power supply is overkill for that setup, and you only need 8gb or ram for gaming

Thanks for the input guys,

CPU: AMD FX-8350
MB: Asus AMD990FX Crosshair Formula-Z
Heatsink: H100i
RAM: 16GB Patriot Viper Gen 3 Black Mamba 2400MHz
HDD: Samsung 840 EVO 256GB SSD
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
GPU: R9 290X
PSU: Corsair AX860i
Case: Corsair Carbide 540 Air or 900D

What case would you think is more appropriate? In your view what FPS should I expect at 1080P at Max settings?

Thanks,

In terms of games that make good use of the majority of cores (I.E. Battlefield) it can keep up with most of intel's quad cores (up to and including the 3770k/4770k) otherwise it depends on the OC, I never had problems with performance with my rig and it is basically running at 8350 stock speed.

To be honest I would stick with all ssds for this build since money seems less of a concern. I would personally go with a different options of cases but out of the 2 listed an Air 540 is better suited for you.

We can't predict the FPS of a 290x since it is not released, but it being on par with a titan(rumors) i assume it will be on par and slower/faster depending on the game. In other words.. 1080p is a joke for this card lol:p

Hi,

What cases are you thinking of? Just for future reference what makes the 540 more suitable for this build than the 900D?

Indeed, should we expect a 20% increase in performance on the R9 290X over the 280X or could it possibly be in that Holy Grail of 30-40%? The reason I ask is the GTX780 (£500+) is better than the 280X (£249+) this is well known and the GTX Titan (£800+) is better than the GTX780 (just) so if the 290X has been build to take on the Titan would the 30%+ increase on a single GPU solution be realistic?

Hi,

Have you ever benchmarked your rig?

Thanks,

The 540 Air is better for you in this situation because of the hardware that's going into the build and the fact that you are not watercooling. I would go for a 750D, Nzxt Switch 810, or Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 for this build. For a h100i all the said cases support them, but the Arc Midi is the cheapest and smallest(still an amazing case) and will fit all the hardware easily.

Some 4k benchmarks were posted and the 290x came out on top of a 780x but was hinted that it also came out over the titan as well. Safe to say it will be faster and much cheaper.

Hi all,

What do you think of this build? (Yes I am aware I can build a better Intel System for the same price etc)

Water Cooling:
RayStorm AMD CPU Waterblock
- D5 Dual Bay Reservoir
- D5 Vario Pump
- EX360 Dual Radiator
- G1/4" to 7/16" Compression Fittings x6
- XSPC 1650rpm 120mm Fan x3
- 120mm Fan Grill (Black Chrome) x2
- 2 Meters of Clear 7/16" Hose

CPU: AMD FX-9590
MB: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z AMD 990FX
RAM: 16GB Patriot Viper Gen 3 Black Mamba 2133MHz
HDD 1: Samsung 840 EVO 256GB SSD
HDD 2: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
HDD 3: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
GPU 1: R9 290X
GPU 2: R9 290X
PSU: Corsair AX1200i
Case: Corsair 900D

Thanks,

if you're aware.. why would you buy it?

Big gamble on the 290's if you ask me.
Edit: also if you're custom looping it, you might as well cool the gpu's as well...

Just not particularly interested in getting a third LGA2011 build... I could but its not calling out to me shall we say.

In regards to the 290's, there is not a VGA block for them yet. I may end up selecting the GTX780ti if it turns out to be worth it over the GTX780 anyway.

Thanks,

Go for the 8350 over the 9590, most 8350s can do 5.0ghz (or close enough) and the majority of motherboards support the 8350. If you'd rather get one of AMD's "super" chips I'd go for the 9370 as it'll run cooler at very little performance loss. Cooling is a major issue for some of the 9590s. In terms of gaming performance I always end up showing this video for AMD vs intel in gaming/streaming performance:

** USE THE PROPER YOUTUBE TAGS PLEASE ** Alright, I will from now on.

I don't own any benchmarking software myself but I haven't had issues with any games (including the enemy of any AMD chip, ARMA 2) due to my cpu. Also, the 9590/9370s are looked down upon by everyone, including AMD fans.

Edited *another* post with proper youtube tags, come on lads we have a guide for this, the url method asplodes the forum layout because it's retard-mode. use youtube tags please

My bad, sorry. Also I originally wanted to link the video by just using the insert link on a piece of text and it didn't work, it just put the video like I'd just pasted the link directly. I then edited it to post the link but yeah, why can't I do that anymore? D:

**back on topic**
I'd wait for the 290x and 780ti reviews before choosing as well, it is also what I am doing now. The wait is killing me.

Hi all,

I plan on waiting it out to see who retains the crown once the GTX780ti joins the fray.

I have seen that Vid before :) They got accused of being bought by AMD after that Vid was released on their channel.

In regards to everyone looking down on the 9XXX series chips I think that is a tad harsh, granted their prices upon original release were a absolute disgrace but they are 'pure' insanity, something AMD was loved for in the early days and its all about how much power is used... seriously get a tablet if that is a genuine concern...

Barnsley, if you could build a high end Intel system would? Option 1 or Option 2, as an AMD fan your view will hold great weight when I weigh up the points in order to make a decision.

Option 1:
Water Cooling:
RayStorm AMD CPU Waterblock
- D5 Dual Bay Reservoir
- D5 Vario Pump
- EX360 Dual Radiator
- G1/4" to 7/16" Compression Fittings x6
- XSPC 1650rpm 120mm Fan x3
- 120mm Fan Grill (Black Chrome) x2
- 2 Meters of Clear 7/16" Hose

CPU: AMD FX-9590
MB: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z AMD 990FX
RAM: 16GB Patriot Viper Gen 3 Black Mamba 2133MHz
HDD 1: Samsung 840 EVO 256GB SSD
HDD 2: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
HDD 3: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
GPU 1: R9 290X
GPU 2: R9 290X
PSU: Corsair AX1200i
Case: Corsair 900D

Option 2:
Water Cooling:
RayStorm Intel CPU Waterblock
- D5 Dual Bay Reservoir
- D5 Vario Pump
- EX360 Dual Radiator
- G1/4" to 7/16" Compression Fittings x6
- XSPC 1650rpm 120mm Fan x3
- 120mm Fan Grill (Black Chrome) x2
- 2 Meters of Clear 7/16" Hose

CPU: Intel 4930K
MB: Asus Rampage Extreme IV x79 Intel
RAM: 16GB Avexir Core Extreme Red Series 2933MHz
HDD 1: Samsung 840 EVO 256GB SSD
HDD 2: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
HDD 3: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
GPU 1: GTX780ti
GPU 2: GTX780ti
PSU: Corsair AX1200i
Case: Corsair 900D

Thanks,

As an AMD fan the intel CPU would make more sense if you want to spend over £1100ish although I wouldn't want to go for the NVIDIA cards due to personal experience with nvid :l and I'd do a SFF build. If you want to spend mega bucks on an AMD build I'd still go for a 8350. AMD builds are for gaming only really and an 8350 should do really well against any game you throw at it now.

Basically my ideal AMD based build would be:

8350
2x 280x or 1x 290x
16GB ram
all in an corsair air 540 or something from lan li.
custom loop

Hi,

The only thing that nags me about the FX-8350 is the whole silicon lottery situation. Why small Form Factor?

My biggest consideration right now is maxing Elder Scrolls Online and not dipping below 60 FPS (50 would be the lowest I would want to go), which I know cannot really be quantified at present due to the game being in closed Beta, unless there are any Beta invitees present?

Are there any other AMD fan's with similar or differing views?

I have not had any issues with Nvidia but kind of fancy an AMD GPU as I have not had one for what seems like an age now.

Thanks,

Unless you get incredibly unlucky the majority of 8350s can hit 4.8ghz easily. I've always wanted a SFF build as in my opinion they are the ultimate stealth machine and currently you can't make SFF AM3+ builds. The elder scrolls online doesn't look demanding to me however you must remeber that the people who are making it are reknown for not really polishing games until a while after release and I personally would give them a while to fix it before trying it.
