Network monitoring?

I know little of networking so i'm sorry if my question sounds silly

So i want to monitor the internet traffic through my house because i have younger brothers and i dont want them on things they shouldnt be (nude ladiesss lol) so is there a programme that monitors all the internet traffic from my house and shows like what websites they have been been on etc and what device they used to look at it they all have phones and computers (kids these days! my first phone was a 3310 lol)

One option would be to set up an OpenDns account and use their DNS servers. This will allow you to set what kind of websites would you like to block(adult content/drugs/gambling etc.) They do have some stats that will show you what websites have been visited but I don't think it will show what device visited. At first you could just check on what websites they go on to for example.

Another option would be to use Wireshark while being connected to your router. This will record all data going back and forth and you can sort the http.host traffic. If i remember correctly it does have an option for name resolution so it will show website names instead of ip's wherever possible.
Using wireshark will tell you which device made the request but it is also more work since you will probably have to check every day/week and tbh I would use OpenDns unless you really want to spy on your home network :p.

Hi,

Completely agree with Snortan.

OpenDNS can be added to your routers DNS which in turn (if using DHCP) gives these details to all client machines on your internal network (This will include mobile devices). You will need to have the software installed on one PC which will update OpenDNS if your external IP has changed (most home broadband users are on dynamic IP addresses ) . You will be able to lock certain categories down on the OpenDNS Portal (Pornography etc..) which is managed by an email address and password. I'm not sure if there's functionality to view each individuals traffic because you all leave one IP...any ways the last time I deployed it (last year) it was free so fill your boots and scare your kids by being the Internet Lord ;-P
