So I need to OC my CPU, as I mainly play MMO's which are very CPU dependent. With updates to games over the last few years I've noticed my performance going down slowly. It's got to the point where I've been considering upgrading whole PC, as I cant seem to find any CPU upgrades available for the motherboard I have due to the socket.

Considering I dont really have the money to buy a new PC, or motherboard and CPU for that matter (mainly because I'm saving for a new GPU), I thought of having a go at boosting my CPU.
I gather the cooling I have for it should be sufficient enough, am only looking to get it up to 4.0GHz really, anything more would be cool but possibly not needed.

Any info, tips, advice and or links to walk through would be much appreciated!

Thanks, Alex.

You don't have any CPU upgrade options because thats the top CPU for that platform.

In addition, you do not need a new CPU for MMOs. Yours is more than enough. What you failed to mention is your GPU. If you have a low end GPU, that's the problem and seeing as you said you are saving up for one, that's probably what the problem is. You can OC the CPU all you want but if the GPU isn't capable of giving you good performance, it won't change anything.

So what GPU are you currently using? And are you using the latest drivers for said GPU?
Let's figure out if the GPU is the problem here before talking about OC'ing.

Hey thanks for replies, my GPU is a gtx780 which I'll be looking to upgrade within next month or two for a 1070.

The reason I feel that I need to overclock the CPU is that when there are many players in my vicinity, in the region of 30+ all using spells and whatnot I do notice a slow down on performance. I just assumed it was due to CPU not being able to compute enough of the information quick enough.
