Need help picking out a new gpu....

I have a coolermaster GX450w psu but I will be getting a Corsair HX750w Psu in feb after I take care of some bills then I can get a new video card. How much do you's think a 7970 will be after the amd 8xxx's come out?

A 450w would be fine with a 7850, so a power supply upgrade wouldn't be necessary. I wouldn't recommend upgrading in such short intervals though, either going for a 7850 now or a 7970 later would probably be a better choice, rather than both.

Wouldn't count on the prices of the 7970's to fall that much though, prices are usually slow to respond during initial release and although they may fall a bit, due to declining stock older cards tend to stay around the same price. In such cases it would probably be better to go for the 8xxx series instead, though that would take a while.

hmmm, ok would 450w be ok with this card- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127681 because I think I might be able get squeeze an extra $60 out somewhere. Then I could always run in crossfire later on to keep it up to pase with newer cards, but more than likely, it will be close to the 8xxx's coming out by then and I may as well just wait one more month and save up some more money and get something like a 8950 or a 8870

I wouldn't recommend running a HD7870 on a 450w to be honest, especially with a heavily overclocked CPU and with that specific unit. In such cases it may be better to upgrade to a 550w-650w unit, especially with future upgrades in mind.

It's your choice whether you wait for the newer HD8xxx series or not, but that wouldn't be a bad choice either if you plan on replacing the power supply too.

yea, I was planning on upgrading my psu to a 750w just because I might do crossfire and I would hate to have to buy another psu after I just bought one. It just seems like a waist of money to me. As for the gpu I guess it will depend on when I have the money available and what the prices between the older 7xxx series is and how much better the 8xxx series is. So I guess I will just be rockin my oc'd 6670 until I figure out what I will be doing with the gpu. By the way does overclocking a 6670 to full load damage it??? Mine starts to make a little whine when I play easy games on med-High like dirt 3 and nfs mw

What power supply do you currently have? The HD7850 pulls a fair bit more power than the 6670, so make sure it can handle the extra load.

Haven't they fixed that already? I'm not too sure about this given there's a lot of different Sapphire 7850's, but it seems like the newer dual-x cards are using a different design from AMD's reference design which is seen with the second 6-pin PCI-e.

They did fix it, but the card in the link was the first Dual-X they made, the one with the potential issue.

Hey, i have the same cpu and i use an Asus gtx560ti DirectCUII and it runs all games fine. great temps and its a great gpu has worked fine for me so far.

Thats not a bad idea either. I am still thinking 7870 as of now but there is still lots of time to decide, a 660ti is also in my decision making. So right now it is 7850,560ti,7870,660ti or a new 8xxx series that I am now deciding between

If you don't want to wait for the 8000's to be released, (they look pretty nice), I would suggest a GTX 660. I know a couple people with them and i don't think you can beat the performance/price. There is this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162122
for only $199 and you get ACIII free with it. The gigabyte model is just 10 bucks more if you prefer.

I don't have the numbers on hand but you can look up why the TI is not worth the money. The percent gain in FPS you would get is far below the percent more money you would be spending to get the TI version. $50 bucks more at least. Roughly 25% more cost and around half of that in fps increase.

I would also wait for the 8000's to come out, but in case you become inpatient, that's my 2 cents on the matter.

Yea, so I am getting impatient as my oc'd 6670 gets worse every day, how do you guys feel about the msi hawk 7870? I will also look at the 660's

Far as I know that's not that good of a PSU, especially if you push it a bit. Secondly, you might want to take a look at the review Tom did of the latest 7870 Tahiti LE on the front page. It looks like the best GPU for the money, by far. Trades blows with the 7950, which is 50-60 quid more expensive.

yea, I know it's not the best psu out there but still plan on getting a corsair psu, its just temporary till I can get a better quality one. I will look at that gpu,But I don't know if they sell that one here in the U.S

So they have this one-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131484 which is the Tahiti LE and then there is this one-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127681 which looks very good. They are both the same price.
