Need help Fast!!

so i bought a new computer (not build, only the parts) and tried to build it myself, but ran into a problem when trying to power it up for the first time.

specs:

Asus P6T Deluxe - X58

Intel Core i7 920 (stock fan and clock)

Corsair Dominator 3x1GB 1600mhz

XFX GTX 260 Black Edition

500GB WD Caviar HDD

Corsair 750W PSU

Cooler Master Cosmos S

anyway, i didn't even connect the power button to the mobo yet, i just used the onboard power button, and when i hit it everything turns on for a split second and then shuts down, yet the PSUs' fan keeps on going until i pull the plug.

i'm pretty damn sure i connected all the cables, yet this is my first time trying to build a pc all by myself (or at all for that matter), so anything is possible.

please let me know if this is something easy i can just fix, maybe some part got damaged in the shipping (mobo heatpipes seem a bit odd).

please help FAST, TIA.

Check for shortenings

  1. Screws
  2. Metal items
  3. Motherboard touching tray
  4. Leads touching metal

Are you sure that all leads are connected correctly, make sure you have all power cables in. Do the booting process but removing all items such as sound/graphics etc...

Try one RAM stick at a time.

yeah try taking everything out and running the system out of the case.

Also take the cpu/ram/vga out and make sure it has the speaker plugged in, if you dont get any bios beeps them rma it.

First really quick thing off the top of my head. You know the big 24 pin power plug into the motherboard? There should also be another one (4 or 8 pin) that's located near the CPU socket. If that isn't plugged in then it can give the symptoms you described.

so i connected the 8 pin and it still didn't work.

tried disconnecting the VGA, still didn't work.

gonna try disconnecting the ram, but i'm not sure where to plug the little speaker.

and if the mobo touches the tray will it not work???

mobo should be off the tray. It will short if it touches.

Did you sit you mobo on the supplied bolts?

Couldn't take some pics could ya?

Yes show us some pics I have a simlar'ish board (rampage X58) had no problems like this either you have installed somethign wrong or somethings faulty.

do you have a LCD poster, if so what does it say when you turn the pc on?

so, basically i got that problem solved.

the mobo was indeed touching the tray, just had to use the "Stand off" screws first.

but (of course) another problem has occurred. after plugging in everything and checking that the computer indeed does turn on and run for until i turn it off, i connected the keyboard, mouse, and screen (via DVI).

but the screen got no signal, and the mouse and keyboard got no electricity.

now, i didn't put the mobo i/o shield, because i found it a bit confusing, but i doubt that is causing the problem.

any ideas??

If you aren't sure, you should take it into a PC shop and maybe they can help you there. I'm sure you can do it by yourself, but it's better to be on the safe side, especially with such expensive components. I'm sure I'd be making the same mistakes as you if I was building my own PC. Good luck on the build, I hope all goes well, and post some pics when you're done! :beerchug:

I'm pretty sure the motherboard was fried since there were no stand-offs...

->

Time to shop for a new board. RMA'ing that would be... dodgy...

so get this, mono ain't fried, problem was, i wasn't using the primary memory slots!

i called up Asus tech support, which was phenominal btw, the guy went with me through every stage possiable, until we got to the problem.

now everything seems to be functioning properly, yet i can't get the damn power buttun to work (i use the onboard button for now).

of course cable managment is a far cry from my case, but i'll try and post some pics in the coming days.

thanks for everyone who tried to help out :wavey:

Good to hear would have doubted that it would fry it in anycase, the board has protection features. as in shutting itself off
