NEED ADVICE I'm helping my friend upgrade (Oh what a nightmare)

Backstory of the build:

Okay so my buddy wanted help upgrading his PC. He wanted to get a new graphics card in his prebuild POS. He currently has a HP Pavilion HPE h8-1214 Desktop PC (I will put the specs detailed in the next section if you don't want to skim this link). As you can see it needed a bit more than just a GPU.

I recommended he get a GTX 770 and a new PSU. Now before you say "Hey that's going to bottleneck he is wasting his money, you gave horrible advice!" let me just say he does plan on upgrading further and making his system better, so I recommended a good future proof option that will be good once he upgrades more.

So yesterday we got the parts and started to install them.
Holy shit what a nightmare.

Needless to say I told him he needs to buy a new tower ASAP as to avoid overheating issues.

Well after putting in everything and making it fit (kinda) we could not get the fucker to boot past POST. I did uninstall the drivers beforehand, update the bios, yadayadayada no matter what I got nothing even after hours and hours and hours of trying different methods. So after a good amount of research I found that the GTX 770 (and the whole 7xx family really) just has some incompatibly with HP shitboards. So after some disappointment I told him we could still get an upgrade underway but he would need to spend some more cash and get a new MOBO and in turn a new case due to his being a micro and just shitty in general.

TLDR start here
Where I need advice:

So now to the meat of the matter I need help picking a good MOBO for him that matches his price range of $140.

Here are his specs:
CPU: AMD FX-6100
Memory: 10GB DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600)
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX770 (Just upgraded to old is Radeon HD 7450)
PSU: Corsair CX600
HDD: 1.5TB (5400rpm)
Optical Drive: SuperMulti DVD Burner
He also has a Multimedia card reader

He already has a case ordered (not great but decent) the APEVIA X-Sniper2.

The ones that I found that best match the price range are:

MSI 990FXA-GD65V2

ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3

ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0

Which one would you guys recommend that he buys for his set-up, and why do you think whatever one you choose would be the best option? Any advice or insight would be much appreciated.

The Gigabyte is a decent board provided the new design/revision shown on your link has resolved the heat issues (I have the UD3 rev.3 and the NB heatsink gets stupidly hot, mosfet one warms up a bit too tbh).
Personally, that would be my choice out of those.

Ok, i don't know enough on the ASROCK motherboard as it hasn't been out too long. You should check out reviews as it could be really good (older ASROCK boards throttled alot of CPU's) The order i would personally go with are:

ASUS M5A99FX PRO > GIGABYTE UD5 > ASROCK >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MSI

The reasoning? the ASUS board can handle good overclocks if you were to ever get a 8 core etc... and it a great all round performer. GIGABYTE 2nd but try to make sure you get the latest REV version (4 i think) With added heatpipes and beefier VRM cooling. ASROCK, looks good, and is new so could be great but read up first to check out if it can handle high overclocks etc... The MSI are notoriously bad for AM3+ All of their boards on the 970 will throttle an 8 core and even heard a few bad things about the 990 chipset (worse VRM design/throttling etc...)

So if they ever want to upgrade to a 6300/8350 that would be my order of things. The ASROCK i can't say for certain so it hits 3rd place for me (it might come 2nd for all i know atm currently - so check it out/forums googly :p)

I hope it helps!

We decided upon the ASUS do to it being a great reputable brand, got a GREAT deal on Amazon ($115) and has the most compatibility with memory (compared to the ASROCK which apparently has some issues with certain RAM sticks and he has some shitty HP cheap-o RAM)

Nice! It should be a rock solid board even if you get an 8core chip and overclock nicely, with great powerphases on the VRM's. Yea the ASROCK is quite new, so haven't really seen it much (and being quite pricey) I hope the board serves you well!
