Need a router recomendation

New member
Changing my service providers, will be using one that I will need a CABLE ROUTER for.

I do not want to to use the providers router as its an added monthly fee to the bill.

I do not have much knowledge in the different routers so was hoping to get recomendations from some of you here that may be using one you like or might know of a good one for me.

First off, I do not want to spend a crap load of cash on it at this time, so im looking for something that balences low cost and reliability. I will purchase ither from a local shop like Best buy or online from Newegg.com.

So here are the requirements......

Cable modem.

Low cost.

Needs at least 3 Ethernet cable outputs for 3 hard wired devices.

Must have wireless capability for Ipod and Xbox access.

Must be compatible with xbox 360.

Thats about it for the minimum requirements.

So any ideas? or stuff to stay away from?

unless you live in a house that has 1m thick walls, or you have a laptop and you need a signal at the bottom of your 150m garden, there is no need for a wireless-N router

If you're going to use it for torrents and stuff, you'll need a router that handles a large number of connections and that supports QOS.
 
I am using the Linksys WAG160N not too expensive easy to use and just a great modem router couldn't recommend it more.
 
+1 for the wrt54gl

I have 2, they just work, well i mean I have never had a issue with them and they always just chug along, one even has a bit of rust on it after some water got in it on the roof but still works fine lol.

Mine are runnning DDWRT though, You could put Open WRT on it.
 
My favorite wireless router has been the WRT54GL for years now. Only problem is it doesn't have a built in cable modem if that's what you are looking for.

Wait what? Is this true? the service provider I will be using is a cable tv company, so It will have to be a cable modem.

I guess I did not make that clear before.

I need a cable modem that is also a Router with the mentioned requirements.

Sorry if I left that out. every modem I have used has been a Modem/router. so was not thinking of them as separate items.

So ya, I need a cable modem/router with wireless. must have at least 3 hard wire ethernet plugs, be xbox compatable, low cost/reliable. and torrent use friendly does not hurt for my occasional tv shows I miss. And that linksys was looking so good.
 
When choosing a router - make sure it supports uPnP. It makes life easier with setting up Xbox 360 for streaming.

99% of the routers out there provide comprehensive port forwarding, which is what you need to setup for a fully Open NAT.

Over here, in the UK on Virgin Media Broadband, recently they've released a Cable/Router Combo (made by Netgear/Cisco). There might be an option later on down the line with your ISP.

As mentioned, Draytec is very reliable and highly regarded.

That second one is out of my price range, I looked at the draytec stuff too, they look nice but also more than I want to spend right now, looking at maybe sub $60 range. but that first one does not look bad. Another to add to my list. Also still a Linksys!. So, now as far as Routers go I have

1. $50 Linksys E1200 IEEE 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz Wireless-N Router

and

2. $56 Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g Wireless Broadband Router
 
Number 1 has the better wireless signal, and does look more aesthetically pleasing.

The 2nd router is completely moddable with custom 'Tomato' firmware (basically turning it into a high powered switch with all diagnostics and additional features). Here is more info on this: http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato and here http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index

If I had to choose one, it would be the 2nd, because there are so many tweaks and guides around the net for it - it's widely used.
 
I'm running tomato on my wrt54gl, it gives you QOS and allows you to tweek the Transmit Power, and lots of other things, overall is pretty good. I do however have to reset it once in a while.
 
Linksys WRT54GL.... I will be setting this up for several devices but also for a home network to move files from one pc to my second PC. How hard is this router to set up for a Router noob?

Also I am assuming the "G" is still fast enough to wireless game, Wireless netflix videos on the xbox, and Ipod youtube watching? My main net speed is going to be 7mb DL.

Looks like I can get this from New Egg with shipping for a grand total of $54.11
