Need a little help.

Hi guys.

I'm having a little trouble lately with BSoD running Windows 8. Since the upgrade I haven't managed to get my system running 100% stable. I haven't overclocked or anything yet but intend to (once i learn how to :/). Anyway the problem has got worse since I installed another 2x8gb kit of corsair's dominator platinum. I thought I bought the exact same kit as the one I had installed but it turns out there's a slight difference between the two.

kit 1: CMD16GX3M2A1866C9 timings: 9-10-9-27
kit 2: CMD16GX3M2A1866C10 timings: 10-11-10-30

Here's hoping they're compatible and I don't have to send anything back aha :)
The problem could be drivers aswell? Since installing windows 8 I haven't reinstalled all of the drivers for my mobo (sabertooth z77) from the asus website.

Any help would be hugely appreciated. I need this system to run 24/7 without fault as I often render large files using 3ds max.

Thanks

Dave

welcome to OC3D forums, dave..

ok, first things.. this was an upgrade or a clean install for the operating system?
i think you upgraded over a prior OS install. eeeewwwww

there is a guide to installing Win8 upgrade as a clean install. and you need a clean
install for Win8 and d/l all the appropriate Win8 drivers for:
Chipset
LAN
Video
SATA/USB
Audio

you need to send the c10 kit back, but thats not the problem.

Well set the timings manually in the bios. There is a difference

kit 1: CMD16GX3M2A1866C9 timings: 9-10-9-27
kit 2: CMD16GX3M2A1866C10 timings: 10-11-10-30

Notice that the second kit has C10 at the end and the first has C9? Well that's the Cas Latency from what I know. So the second kit you bought is CL10 instead of CL9 like the first kit. That's why there's a difference in timings. Now I don't know if this causes the BSOD but you should set the timings manually to 9-10-9-27 or 9-9-9-27 in the BIOS.

..... but you should set the timings manually to 9-10-9-27 or 9-9-9-27 in the BIOS.

ummmm.. dont think its just that easy... usually C10 is C10 and you'd wanna
match the C10 because it'll prolly take some voltage to maintain C9 on a C10
XMP.
ill bet they are in the BIOS as 1333 and not XMP Profiled.

ah..thanks for the quick replies. I'll do a fresh install right now, get the drivers I need and get one of the kits sent back asap :)

Don't suppose you know if scan are good with returns? I thought it wouldnt be a problem but my old man has put some doubt in my mind...'yeah, I think i'm going to return the kit', 'if they'll take it'.

I'll get all this done and let you's know how it goes.

Cheers again

Dave

and I didnt think anything of it until i booted up windows 8 for the first time and it played the windows 7 welcome tone. i thought 'eww' haha :)

My mistake, I haven't had lots of experience with RAM. I ran two different modules ( frequencies/timings ) back in the DDR day but I didn't care too much back then. ^_^

Can't belive that Windows8 was the mixed with windows7. Weird having Windows 7 sounds at the start of Windows 8 lol!
It's a good OS, Windows 8. Too bad less people are opened to the bald idea that Microsoft had than they were when Win7 came out.

Ok I've got all of the drivers, bar one installed. In the chipset download section there are a couple to download. I'm not sure if i'm suposed to download more than one or what. anyway I've downloaded the Intel Chipset Driver V9.3.0.1021 and left the Management Engine Interface V8.1.0.1263 as I have no idea what that is. There's also a firmware update I could get but it says i need that management engine for it so I'm giving it a miss until i know more about it ^^

The ram is running at 1333 and not XMP. I tried to set XMP profile 1 and change the timings but my system just powered down for a few seconds, then came back to life for a few more seconds and repeated the process (the whole time i had blank screen). So i feel i may need some help with setting that up too :/ sorry, i'm pretty useless

Dave

well installing all of the drivers seem to have been a success. just had my 1st night of no blue screens for over a week.

Now there's just the issue of overclocking the cpu to around 4.4 (using corsair 550D) and my ram to 1866. I'm going to have a look around the forum for all the info I can find. If anybody knows links that a beginner would understand feel free to throw them at me :)

thanks again

Dave
