Nearly ready to start water cooling

I am going to build my first water cooling rig.

I am nearly ready to start water cooling only a couple of things left to get (main one being my Asus Commando from RMA).

Please see the list and let me know if everything is covered.

I have;

CPU block Aqua Computer Cuplex XT DI 775

Eheim - 1250 pump

Black Ice Xtreme Radiator (single)

Criticool Power Plant Relay Card

½” pipe – Thanks Marcus

Cape Coolplex 25cm Reservoir

I need;

Feser One Coolant – Don’t know what colour though???????

Set of ½” barbs for the res.

(Possibly) double radiator

This is to be housed in a Thermaltake Kandolf case.

Questions;

I want a cool, quiet system so will I have to run the fan on the single rad at full pelt to keep the CPU cool as I will be over clocking?

I have the room to put a double rad in the front would this be a better/safer option?

I could always keep the single in the loop as well?

Eventually I will get a n/b block but not until the board has been tested for a while after RMA as I don’t want to return it again after messing with the original heat sinks as may have a detrimental effect on the guarantee.

This is (hopefully) going to be my completed setup.

Pump - Double radiator – CPU - Single radiator – N/B – reservoir - back to pump

Does this sound about right?

Any help/advice appreciated.

Dave (n00b).

I will try and make the question clearer

Will the set up above be OK if cooling the CPU only with just a single rad or will I be better off getting the double rad in the loop so then at least I have it for future blocks I may get?

Only asking as trying to save some money and hoping a single will do for now. If you think I may need a double I will place a wanted post in the trading section and try and get a second user one as i will not be building for a week or so then will buy new next week if nothing turns up.

This brings another question; If i do need a double rad ,which is best? I have seen a couple @ 277mm high this is about the limit on height i want. I could go bigger but don’t really want to sacrifice more drive bays. How fat the rad is, is not a problem. Which do you recommend for cool quiet running?

Pump > CPU Block > Double Rad > N/b > Single Rad > Res > Pump

that would be better, but your gonna need a pretty good pump for that loop...

Ide probably go

Pump > CPU Block > Double Rad > Res > Pump

Save yourself some money, unless the northbridge temps are really high.

Secondly you didnt tell us whats going into your machine so how do we know which stuff you should be buying.. :)?

The Thermochill Rads are by far the best, Black Ices are pretty good also.. Just shop around and find some reviews of the Rads you have your eyes on.

Hope that helps abit.

Pat

have one rad before your cpu block after the pump as the pump can dump a lot of heat into the system and you want the coldest water possible going through your cpu block.

I always thought the rad goes before the block?

i.e. pump-rad-block-res-pump ??

I know the Eheim 1250 pump is not a modern day w/c pump but dont you think it will be strong enough for the 2 block loop?

Sorry specs are;

C2D E6420

Asus commando MB

Geil Ultra DDR2 2.0GB PC6400 Dual Channel memory kit

EDIT; YOUR GOOD, YOU ANSWERED THE PUMP ORDER QUESTION BEFORE I ASKED IT????????????

So am I correct in saying that you don't yet have a NB block? Why do you need an 120.2 and 120.1 rads in that loop? The 120.2 will be able to handle your CPU and NB when you cool it.

The pump will add heat-dump to your loop, but how much is pump dependent. I'd run the loop as follows

res > pump > rad (120.2)> cpu > NB > res

You are correct i don’t have a NB block as yet. I only mentioned using two rads as i will have a single here doing nothing if i need to buy a double.

What i didn’t realise a double will cool both CPU & NB. Hmm, Interesting. It will make for a cleaner looking case.

Yes it will most definitely cool what you have currently listed for water-cooling, and it will make the loop look tidier/add less restriction. :)

A double it will be then.

The Thermochill above is a bit more than i want to spend (and its a bit taller than ideal).

Now i have just done a google on the Black ice and it comes as GTS, GT Stealth, Xtreme, and pro versions?????

HELP!

Can you afford one of the Swiftech 120.2 rads? The Thermochill is certainly the better rad, but the Swiftech MCR series (MCR220) is no slouch and better performing than the ones you have just listed imho.

When i get cleared to use the trading section i will see if anyone has a double for sale and see what turns up. If nothing turns up by the middle of next week i may look at the Swiftech only thing is its slightly longer that the black ice so will use up another bay.

Looks like i have been out expertised.. haa :) well pumping straight into the rad from my pump would be nigh impossible so.. lol. :)

I have had an email from Asus today DHL have my board as its on its way back to me. :dribble:

So i have ordered the Swiftech Thanks PV5150.

I did Google it and as you said the Thermochill seems to be top dog with a big gap to the rest of the rad makers with Swiftech somewhere in between.

I ordered all the other bits i could think of that i needed while i was at it. I was unsure about which phermal paste to use. I have always used AS5 but not this time as i have read people were having good results with the Arctic Cooling MX-2 so thought i would give it a go.

Couldnt make my mind up on what colour F1 to get was going to get. Green I thought as my old rig is blue so wanted a change. Then took a look at my CPU block --Cuplex XT Di 775 G1/4-- and thought better of it as i didn’t think it would look right. So i asked the wife what she thought "BIG MISTAKE" Stop wasting money and use tap water??? Women just dont understand :banghead: So i ordered 2L or the Smoothy F1 Water UV Invisible Blue.
