NAS build advice needed

so i might build myself a NAS soon but i've never really done that and didn't really look into it
gonna use it for music, videos etc.

not really sure what kind of parts and OS i want so any advice is very welcome

i'd like to use fractal design node 304 though
should also be relatively quite so i'm gonna throw some noctua cpu cooler in there

regarding storage i was thinking a 32gb ssd for the OS and 4x 2TB WD Red in raid 1

i don't really have a budged either but i'd like to keep the cost relatively low without having to sacrifice quality

thanks in advance

I dont think there's a mITX board that has 5 SATA ports.

Are you literally using it as a file server? or do you plan on using it for other things in the future?

In that case, id go with that board
Pentium G3420
8GB of value memory
kingston value SSD,
HDD from here as they have the cheapest price i can find
Gold rated psu of your choice

Because your going with raid 1, you can use the on-board raid function, but do you have a backup in place? in case the raid fails?

Also what OS are you planning on using?

well i guess ordering from amazonUK to germany isn't that cheap ;)
the 2TB Red's are about 70 pounds each here

yeah i got a backup

as said in the OP, no idea about that. i know that freeNAS exists, would that be a good option?

ahh yeah Germany

Ok FreeNAS is good, but it really shines when you use its RAIDZ function, similar to the RAID 5 or 6, ive played around with it quite a lot and yes it works well, it allows you to create all sorts of shares that are compatible with any OS whether its Samba, NFS or MacOS.

If you're familiar with Linux you could use a lightweight distro and setup its RAID function, which from what ive read is pretty damn robust!

Failing that, Windows, which ever flavour tickles your pickle
