My Summer AMD Project

pci express aint that good, stick with agp, its a well known tecnology and it cant be that much worse than pci-e get....say a nvidea geforce fx 5500 256mb, it can play everything, i kno cos i have one, and if you want to cost cut, go for 754 insted of 939

well 1) pci-e is the future and so is 939 so ill stick with that and be ready for upgrades inclusing amdx2 dual cores.

2) im not really going ultimate budget, id rather have a good upgradable machine tbh. better to spend money now than have to spend mroe later

Dave is right to go for 939 in his case as he is going to get a PCI-E card.

I went for 754 as I have a great AGP card and I will upgrade to 939 and PCI-E in one go. I just wanted the power and OC'ability of A64 instead of my old XP.

Dave's choice is good and he has considered itcarefully and on the advice of others with a lot of knowledge (not me - others, although I have suggested some! :o ). I reckon Davo is on the correct track for his upgrade and we are all in different situations here. AGP is not the future for upgrades as it is being phased out...

Hope you go for it soon Davo!! :)

no it doesnt. nobody has got them to 3GHz stable yet. intheory they are a san diego in s754 clothing, but in realiity they just arent performing.

Yeah but its gonna be better than my Newcie in the short term so I will think about it. The only thing is that I can't use my XP-120. Its either w/c or wait for a new core! :D

has everyone gone off the brilliantly amasing power of agp?! pci-e aint that good, cos pci slots are slow agp are faster, or atleast mine is neway.....

as for 754 vs 939, 939 as dave said is more upgradeable, but if ya cant aford it i would go for 754 like i did!!

n do you mean to say, that they will be phasing out agp?! WHY????? agp is briliant!!!!!!!

because pci-e is faster....twice as fast actually but current agp cards dont use all their bandwisth anyway, thats why there is no difference, however when they start tp need the 16x bus, pci-e will reign supreme.

I don't think you understand (not you Dave). PCI-Express is a very fast dedicated PCI slot that runs at x16. The AGP slot runs at x8. Once GPU and motherboard manufactorers get round to making the bus sync better, then PCI-E will rule. Its faster even now.....so PCI-E is better than AGP - which is being phased out ;)

erm, kempez i said that mate. pci-e is faster but isnt being utilised so there is no blatent performance gain.

I know Dave, but I think Ionicle needs to know PCI-E is NOT PCI - so I'm just re-enforcing your message.... ;)

o ok, i didnt even realise that is what he thought. now i understand!!!

so i just spent 60 quid on a soon-to-be obsolete agp card?! (the nvidea geforce fx 5500 256mb) WHAT?!

HAHA - soon to be obsolete 5500!! Those were obsolete when nividia released them rofl! For £70 you could have got...I dunno - a 9800 or for a bit more a 6600GT!!

Sorry I shouldn't diss ya but couldn't resist it :o

But yeah - AGP is being phased out and soon will be no more! :)
