My New Build (Updated)

Normally I would defiantly go for a twin frozr over any reference card as there quieter and cooler BUT you see the reference 6950 had this thing where you could unlock parts of it so it would run more like a 6970.

Not sure I'd recommend it and it would certainly be something you'd need to look into in depth before buying and a possible warranty void-er at that but I just wanted to mention it.

If you want to play it safe though and you really should then I think the 6950 twin frozr is a really nice card and definitely my favourite out of the 6950's.

This is Tom's review of it http://www.overclock...ozr_ii_review/8

Yeah the card seems to have good performance reviews and I think it's probably a better option to go with the frozr over getting a reference and screwing around with it and possibly voiding the warranty.

It is defiantly safer as 6970 mod is fraught with danger. Its just that you asked what peoples thoughts about the 6950 and that just came to mind

Like I said, the MSI twin frozr would be my pick of the bunch. I doubt you will be disappointed with it mate.

I was going to mention the bios flash, but then I was thinking, I probably wouldn't do it myself, so I cant in good conscience recommend someone else to do it. I'm just cheap is all lol. Cant afford a failure ya know.

The 6950 has a dual BIOS so if you flash it and it goes wrong you have the other one to fall back on also people have only had problems when trying to overclock the card after they have flashed it, as if going from a 6950 to a 6970 isn't enough. some people will just never learn.

I'm sorta the opposite of that. I wouldn't recommend it but I've often thought of buying a 6950 and giving it a go

So there really is no chance to turn it into a brick?

So would you suggest getting a reference 6950 and flashing it to 5970 rather than going for a Twin Frozr?

Looking over this article it doesn't look like it's hard or there have been many problems.

So they had a 6950, then unlocked it to a 6970, then tried to overclock it as if it really was a 6970?!

thats like pulling a tigers tail and getting away before it turned round but then actually going back whilst it was looking at you and trying to smack it in the mouth.

From what I have read the only people that have bricked their card are the ones who have tried overclocking after they have flashed it. The way it works is you flash one of the two BIOS with the 6970 BIOS and it turns it into a 6970 there is even a program that will back up the 6950 BIOS then flash it with the 6970 BIOS for you and will re-flash it back to the 6950 if you need to.

The only thing is the card will run hotter than it's supposed to and this is why people have bricked their cards because overclocking them further increases the heat even more and fries the card.

There is a website with a chart of all the different model 6950s and the success rate of how many people have been flashed without any problems and out of all the ones listed on the chart i think there is 1 that had a problem and 1 that did not flash. I can't remember what site it was though I think it was Toms hardware but i'm not sure.

EDIT: I found the site it was techpowerup.

Hehe, I just linked that above.

Edit: Also, he does say "Apparently currently shipping Radeon HD 6950 cards from all manufacturers - which actually are all the same card with different sticker - have their shaders locked via the BIOS method, so we can exploit it easily."

Making sure they are still shipped like this would probably be a good idea if flashing to the 6970.
