Hay Guys

Well my 6800 Ultra arrived to day so i put my new system together. Just processor memory graphics card and power supply. Pressed the on button and a chip on the bottom of the board burst into flames and sparkes were flying. So my board is fried and a half. Checked memeory its ok thank god. Still need to check graphicks and processor. Quite a scare pulled the power double quick but there is still an awful burnt smell in my flat, least i can't smell my socks now. Has anyone else heard of this or had it happen to them. My firt forrey into SLi, not very succesful. The chip that caught fire is between the com one connector on the board and the usb headers, next to the screw hole.

Obviosly the board is fried but it wasent in the case and there wasent anything for it to short out against and the power supply os fine cos ive just checked that.

Any ideas??

Could of shorted out on the Case.Contact asus, they will be happy to refund you i should think.

Hi, it wasent in the case it was set up on top of a yellow pages for its first test.

Damn thats bad - what about molex wires sticking out/shorting? Have you any unusual bends on the molex which puts extra pressure on them - I've had a wire or two literally pop out of the psu, which in turn fried my raptors. Sounds similar.

I had two of these boards and am convinced that at least one was burnt out by somehting shorting out at the rear of the board.

Like most boards in there first revision - this occurences are not uncommon -unfortuantely.

We'll im taking it bck to the retailer on monday. Ive spoken to them on the phone and they have said they have to send it bck to asus as it has got physical damage. Nuts. Ah well. Got my 7800 coming next week and nothing to run them on :-(.

Now the retailer told me that the board would run fine with my old style Enermax Power supply, it doesent have the extra four plugs on the end but im wondering if that had anything to do with it expiring. Can anyone confirm that it should work with the power supplies. Im running two enermax 465watt babies and dont really want to have to get rid of them.

Thanks for the replies.
