My pc went up in flames :-( any ideas why?

Yea then it's not going to be cheap. Is there any important data on it? Always back up documents to google drive or something like that. I use my laptop as a backup.

Just going to try r-studio if it finds stuff (fingers crossed) I will have to buy the licence

Likely a wire that was pulled against the case causing a short by cutting the insulation. I am surprised the PSU didn't immediately shut down though. It also should have tripped the gfci or the powerstrip feeding it before it got that far. Your homeowners insurance will cover it most likely, but the deductible could be higher than the replacement cost.

 Yeah it is a bit of a worry I bought the corsair psu because of its reviews etc I would expect the psu to trip out before the fire as it must of pulled high amps to create enough heat to cause fire.

It IS a cx series and they aren't considered to be that good (before anyone says it, as far as I've experienced they've been problem free). Still they're not that bad. I think that ODD was faulty and has caused all of this

did ya take it down the fire station?

No not yet but will do soon im on call this week with work and didn't finish till 7pm.
Do you think I should send pics to corsair and to the optical drive manufactures so they can see?
The parts are out of warranty now but system is not all that old.

Well just logged into dabs and found out when I purchased the psu and it was 30th august 2013 so all parts are just over 12 months old :eek::eek:

Im guessing that you didnt bother reading any of the posts prior to your.

Anyways I know that tom said that it was likely the Optical, however perhaps it could have been one of the resistors that were inside the controller? I'm not extremely knowledgeable in this area at all, however if it was indeed the fan controller, the PSU may not have detected it, as the supply is constant and the excess is dispated as heat. Or am I completely off about how fan controllers work

Either way, lets hope the you get an answer when you get the the station, admirable blokes always ready to help.

My PSU got up in flames once but it never caused any fire, it shut down before it did. Another OEM psu I had shot shortened two of it's cables out. It got fried but the PC lived....
You are very unlucky... Did everything died? Even the CPU?

Yikes, glad you and your family are ok and hope you get your data back. I know you are trying a few different programmes to recover it so hope one of them comes up trumps.

Thanks for all your replies :-). I have had success in recovering some important data today from one hard drive that had photos and accounts on so im very happy with that. I also toke pc to my local fire depot but they have given me a phone no and email address to send pictures too as they are only retained fire crew.
:):)

I'm glad that you and your family are ok.
What I can see, from your photos, is that it looks like it started at the fan controller.....
Has anybody from the fire service reported back to you yet? If so, What was their conclusion?
If it was the fan controller, then NZXT are surely liable.
This could have been SO much more serious.
