My 2700k goes to 1.6ghz even when I am using it

I have a pretty darn good computer if I do say so myself (2700k, 16gb ram, 6870). I was playing some deus ex when suddenly windows minimized the game and said something about performance issues and it was wondering if I wanted to disable aero theme. Even if I say yes I had these random moments in the game where it would lag horribly for about 3 seconds and then go back to normal. this happens about 4 times a minute and gets extremely frusterating.

Since I have dual monitors I decided to let cpu-z and realtemp run (i hear temps affect what speedstep does or something). What I noticed is every time it lagged the cpu was running 1.6ghz even though I was in a game.

I just spent the last hour or so disabling things like speedstep / turbo boost/ some c1e or something I cant remember what its called. Tried disabling 1 at a time or all of them or combinations of them and no matter what when I log into windows it will run my cpu at 1.6ghz sometimes. I want it to just stay running full speed even if it is idling. this is frustrating as no matter what I do it seems it wont just stay at a high speed it always feels the need to go down to 1.6ghz.

anyone know how to make my cpu stay at the full speed and NEVER go down to 1.6ghz?

What temperature was the CPU at? Speedstep only clocks down the CPU when there is low load. It sounds like a temperature issue though. What temps/cooling have you got?

Is there any motherboard installed software, and have you checked that the windows power mode is on full power?

yeah there is the asus AI enhancement suite.

Everything seems perfect I jsut noticed it with this game because i get huge lag spikes when it switches to 1.6ghz mode.

What am I supposed to do to disable those features?

If you have checked the power mode is on full power and the CPU should use 100%, you should uninstall the AI suite and any other Asus stuff, as there may well be a power saver thing in there. (Asus EPU I think it's called). If nothing else works, download AIDA64 trial edition and check the temperature of the VRMs when it is at full power, as this may be due to VRM overheating.

Where do I go in the prgram to check those temps? also I thought the asus ai suite thingy was required ? I hate that program and would have uninstalled way earlier if I knew I could.

With AIDA64 go to computer, click that, then go to sensor. It may not have the values there, it really depends on the motherboard. The asus suite is pretty much useless given there are far better programs out there.

software doesnt tell me temp of VRM only the amps and volts or something.

With this motherboard though I actually have TONS of problems and I noticed a lot of people seem to have problems with this type of motherboard that are similar.

I have an asus p8z68-v pro/gen3 motherboard and it does all sorts of crazy things. lemme list some of them

1. occasionally (only happened twice) it will bring me to a screen when i boot up that says "overclock failed" both times it happened I wasnt overclocked.

2. when I turn on my computer sometimes it will turn on but before the monitors kick in the comptuer will just shut off a couple seconds later it will turn on again and boot fine.

3. when I set everything to default and put asus thing to "performance" mode it will boot into windows and about 10 seconds after I am in desktop everything will freeze, this also happens sometimes when I set everything to default. surprizingly the only time I am guranteed this wont happen is when I OC to 4.5ghz or higher than it never has this problem however when I had it running 4.8ghz about 3 times now it would randomly blue screen generally after using the computer for about 10 hours straight.

Looking online many people said this somehow is all related to ram and almost everyone with this problem does have 4 sticks of ram (so do I) The 2 fixes were just take out 2 sticks (which I would never want to do considering i paid like 120$ for those 2 sticks) and some people said to just not overclock or anything and set the profile to XMP (apart from auto or manual). Unfortunately even though my ram is XMP ready the motherboard just wont show it I only have 2 options auto and manual.

I am hoping this stuff will be fixed with a bios update.

Now I found out how to disable speedstep, I also had to disable 3 other things in the bios. I set everything to default and disabled those 4 things now It wont go to 1.6ghz anymore but strangely it stays at 3.6ghz no matter what (even though the cpu is 3.5ghz and 3.9 turbo boost).

My question is. If I have speedstep and such disabled is it ok to overclock and run at 4.8ghz on 1.365 volts 24/7 ?

is it at least safe to run the standard 3.6ghz 24/7?

I am hoping all this stuff will be fixed with a bios update but who knows how long that will take. At first I thought maybe I had a faulty motherboard but from what I see 99% of the people that mess with bios (aka overclock) have problems and 99% of people who never touch the bios have never had a problem.

Also something strange that I dont nkow if it is very common. In the asus suite they have that "auto tune" thing, I havent tried this recently but about a month ago i reset bios to defaults went into windows and let that thing go. What it is supposed to do is restart your computer and show you a screen with clock speeds on it and give you time to either press "keep" or "overclock more" and it will do that until you have desired values or until your computer crashes. Well for some reason when I did ai overclock it would restart and just show a black screen o.0 It would show the black screen for about 40 seconds and then you would hear it reset again. I just force shut off my pc and that was the only way to make it stop. When I got back into windows it was running at like 4.5ghz and would do that same constant freezing thing so I went into bios and reset to defaults.

Is this a problem with the motherboard or just bios instability? I really dont want to have to replace this motherboard because its a freaking hassle also I dont know if I registered it yet (though I still have all the packaging and serial numbers and such). I am afraid if I replaced it 1. i would have to wait like a month minimum with no gaming computer and that would be annoying and 2. I would likely face the same problems.

I chose this motherboard because it seemed the best motherboard for the price it has enough USB ports (I use a lot) and it had a lot of space for upgrading and if I ever went ivy bridge it has pci-e 3.0.

About how long is it usually between bios updates and should I expect to see another one relatively soon?

It seems the cpu was setting to 1.6ghz BECAUSE of deus ex. deus ex is doing something where it will like stop running for a few seconds and in that time my cpu thinks its not working hard so it goes down to 1.6.... ohhhhhhhhh

but still the rest of my problems with my motherboard are annoying and if you guys know how to help / fix that would be great
