MSI Motherboard Won't Boot With 2 PCI Cards?

Hey guys,

I recently broke my back sound ports while cleaning out my PC, so after a few weeks or so I managed to get a Creative sound card. Now comes the problem. I already have PCI wifi adapter in my pc but my motherboard (MSI P67A-GD53 (B3) supports two PCI slots as it has two of them. So I tried to put my sound card, in the second PCI slot but my PC won't boot, it turns on and then 5 seconds later, it restarts without posting; so getting worried that my sound card is broken I put it in my mates PC and its recognizing the sound card and its working perfectly fine.

So after a bit of time diagnosing, my PC has a weird problem. It only boots with one PCI slot inserted. By this I mean I insert my sound card in slot 2 and unplug my WIFI adapter in slot 1 and it boots, then I insert my sound card in slot 1 and WIFI adapter in slot 2 but no boot, then you guessed it I unplug my sound card and it boots in slot two with the WIFI adapter inserted. So it only boots with one PCI slot being used, it wont boot with both of them.

I have updated my BIOS to the latest version but it still only boots with one slot. Please guys can you help, do I need to change settings in BIOS or what? Thanks Guys!:)

There's a chance that you are not supposed to fit two. Maybe they only did that to give you the option.. Only one could be wired, maybe down to IRQ allocation and how the chipset is connected up.

TBH PCI sound cards are so old now that onboards are usually better any way.

As above post says :) but how about you try getting a pcie soundcard that would work better methinks :) either that or a USB wifi dongle whichever is cheaper

I dont think so, and anyway my back sound is broken (on MB) that's why I got a quick sound card. And not if you get a good sound card like Asus, it's definitely WAY better then the motherboard ones mate!

If the thinking behind an IRQ deficiency is sound then (if you haven't already) maybe disabling the on-board sound through the bios could release some resources.

It's usually under onboard devices.

As I suspected the two slots are wired to use the same interrupts. Now some devices don't mind being forced into virtual ones in the OS (since Windows 2000) but some will conflict and stop the board booting.

And the most likely candidates to do that are Creative Sound Blasters. They're terribly fussy and bossy about what IRQs they take.

So, it's either as I said (the board will not function with both PCI slots populated) or it's what I just said now, the Creative card is stopping your PC from booting.

You're a bit limited when it comes to PCI cards but you could try and Asus but I fear you would just run into the same problem.

I would therefore find a sound card that works, dump the wireless and either pick up a decent USB wireless dongle (of which there are many for next to nothing) or get a new motherboard.
