MSI GTX 1080 Ti Lightning Review

The problem is not with Nvidia, but it's the reviewers who started calling it XP, when it's not the name :)

And I don't get the annoyed part. It's been like that every time. And it's like that in IT. Wait 6 month, and there will probably be something better at the market. I would be more annoyed with buying a new generation of cpu, and it's already 20% cheaper.

You can't excuse something because it happens regularly.

Edit: Though apparently people try.

Sorry if it has been said.

Geforce GTX Titan X. (Maxwell)
Nvidia Titan X (big P version, they dropped the Geforce and said it wasn't for gaming)
Nvidia Titan Xp.

If you need to find specs on any of those three use the terms I have given.

Says GeForce on the Titan X and Xp coolers.:)

And the alternative is? Only launch a product every 3 years?

Where did you get the idea that I think products should be released only every three years?

In the case of the Titanium edition cards that are inevitably replaced by the XX80 non-Ti version, there is a reason for that. While it can be frustrating for Ti owners, the XX80 cards are aimed at a slightly different market. The Titanium cards are flagship products with large dies and are generally more expensive to produce and come with higher specifications. The XX80 cards are cheaper to produce and are aimed at those who cannot afford the Ti but want more power than the XX70 cards. They are for people who want better performance per watt, or more accurately don't feel the need to have a beast of a GPU in their system and are quite contented replacing their XX80 with its successor 18-24 months later.

The Titan on the other hand is very different. Releasing the Titan Xp nullified the original's status without distancing itself from it. It even stopped being sold. It's like it never existed. The 980 is still a very good 1080p card and capable of 1440p despite the 1060 being better in almost every way. The 980Ti is still a very good card despite the 1080Ti being better in almost every way. The original Titan XP is still a great card, but it's no longer the flagship when it demanded flagship pricing just five months ago. Some expected a fully unlocked GP102 core, but most didn't think Nvidia would actually have the gall to do it.

Ultimately, if Nvidia had released the fully unlocked Titan Xp GPU and called it that from the beginning, I would think completely differently. But either they couldn't because the silicon was not ready or they wanted one-up themselves one more time.

IMHO Nvidia could make the Titan naming schemes so much easier (and have the full name on the cooler as well):

Titan XM (Maxwell)
Titan XP (Pascal)
Titan XV (Volta)
etc.

It's really not that difficult, Nvidia!

As for 'GeForce' on Titan cards; it's on the original XP, but not on the Xp (=much better!!)

But there is 2 pascal titans. Kind of the problem here :D

He he I was anticipating this comment; the 1st Titan should be. Incidentally I saw one being sold for literally less than I paid for my 1080!

I've asked before but it got lost amongst posts; anyone knows why Nvidia doesn't allow custom PCB/coolers on Titan?

TBH I think it's time Nvidia moved past this Titan moniker. It was amazing on the first card, pleasing on the second but now it's getting old. It's just an excuse for them to not even have to bother designing a cooler or changing it in any shape or form. Laziness and greed. There are plenty of other names you could call a card like this.

I like the Titan moniker personally and you immediately and always know what segment you're dealing with (if a Quadro and a GeForce got a baby, and all that). It's what after the name that needs some actual thought.

What's really getting old for me, personally, is the naming of the Titans. If they released the Titan Black and Titan Z maybe in this gen, it'd be something new and cool, but from now on, all we can expect is a new Titan XV and maybe Titan Xv and so on... I know X and Z are the coolest letters in the alphabet, but heck, maybe some day, we'll see a Titan FU? :D

I use something similar for the bench threads

TitanK Kepler
TitanKB Kepler Black
TitanM Maxwell
TitanP Pascal
TitanXP Pascal Xp

Just had a thought, if NVidia launched a dual core Volta Titan would that be the Titan VD.:D:)

But why change the name. Everybody knows what a titan is.
Look at cars. They have had the same names for more than 30 years ;)

I have seen the light! Let us rejoice!

I have a different suggestion: they should have left and leave the Ti out and either only a Ti with the full Titan memory and cores or name that thing Titan (I don't really care). So above the 1080 that would be one card with at Ti speeds, with Titan memory volume and number of Cuda cores.

Why? Because with the Ti its existence the Xp shouldn't... (extremely similar performance, higher temperatures, more noise (mainly because of the awful blower cooler)).

(and they should call it the F34R edition)
