Hello everyone,
Following from what my thoughts of what I wanted to purchase next for my desktop computer (in no means am I looking to spend more money as I've already payed about 1200 dollars on a retail computer with slight modification) I really am in need of a monitor. The current monitor I am using is a Samsung SyncMaster 953BW which in no means is a monitor that has to be upgraded and is actually from my experience of about 4-5 years has served my family quite well. I note the family part as this is actually not necessarily my monitor but a monitor for the "family computer" which essentially is the first computer that I ever utilized (mind you that I did atleast give it a Sharp Display that I used awhile back for playing Playstation 3 video games) in around 2000 or 2001 which has still to work given a couple of modifications a local computer store had put to it which of course charged primarily huge sums of money (i.e 100 dollars for a virus clean or refreshing with a Windows XP install, Hard Drive instillation, Motherboard upgrade, ect)to keep it to some degree of standards which now I look to shame but now at least I can not be spending more money than I should, might I add that it at least has quite a bit of the standards on it's motherboard that could easily make it more faster than the Seagate Barracuda 500GB Hard Drive which is probably the bottleneck with fragmentation though I don't really want to touch it I could probably throw in an Solid State Drive (it could be quite a low capacity one actually as it's usually only used for Internet Explorer or a backup of photo albums)stay tuned and I may do that project if I feel the need to do so.
Anyways going back to the main discussion, this monitor does have quite a good amount of features that I do like (though I'm guessing given it's 19 inch size it's probably quite simple for a manufacturer to have such specifications) it does have a 2ms response time and a 8000:1 contrast ratio, as far as panels I'm not necessarily sure, I know that it's probably a TN panel with a lcd back light. Now given those specifications I do not want anything below such as that, so do keep that in mind. As far as what I would like to do and what interface I would be using this will be primarily a video game monitor for PC games and Browser searching and whatnot. I would like both VGA and DVI interfaces though I am going to use the DVI with my Radeon HD 6970, though I like the thought of being able to use VGA if dear needed if I had to RMA my Video Card, a laptop to be hooked up what have you not, though I do not care for both HDMI and Mini Display port, given that I do not use them. For features, I want a 2ms response time (I do realize that gray to gray response time isn't the same as other colors so it may be offset in that respect but at least to be quick enough for video games). I do not really want to jump into the 120hz refresh rate standard as it's more expensive and I'm probably not going to get above 75 frame rate in most recent titles so refresh rate can stay at 75hz I do not mind though if you really want to try and convince me please do try. As far as panels, I'm going to put this in capitals as it's the main trade point I would ask a forum for: I DO NOT WANT LCD-LED BACK LIGHTING OR OLED THE RATHER! I can get into more detail of why not, it's more personally as I find these displays given being subjected to their light both hurt my eyes and give me headaches, their blue light depresses me as I in my opinion prefer the yellow tinge as I feel it's a better model of the sun's natural light so going on a standpoint of that, I do have a MLA Darell Dexter in Nova Scotia who is trying to convert all of the lights in the Province into LED light with his private company which you know, I don't know if I can really hide from this standard but I now at least now I can so please keep that in mind, so probably a TN panel as IPS at 23.6 or 24 inches is too expensive for my budget which that gets me to the next point.
I've seen a lot of people try to sway people to get onto 1920x1200 so if you do see that resolution that would be nice but 1920x1080 will do fine I suppose. 24 inches being harder at least when I look at the market to get to these specifications. Aesthetically I do like simplicity in my devices but I mean anything goes as long as I like it but it's not the look of the display but what the display displays I suppose. Lastly I would like to have a matte finish as my current monitor has it though I mean if it's really too hard than a glossy would do fine.
Now I'm going to summarize the list into bullets and have a bit of my own thoughts of what I'm looking at.
-Not an LCD-LED backlight so that may be of which a probably a CCFL which surprisingly locally I can not find monitors of that type so I don't know if they are being ruled out or just out of stock so I'd probably go online.
-A resolution of either 1920x1080 or preferably 1920x1200 though if it's not finding just go with the 1080p.
-A response time of 2ms, though I personally haven't experienced ghosting or have seen it, I do see a slight difference from LCD's with a 2ms response time appose to conventional Televisions that are being phased out.
-A refresh rate of 75hz, I personally don't want to dive into 3D gaming at all or do I think a 120hz refresh rate would really help me, but if you want try to convince me through your own personal experiences.
-A size of probably 23.6 or 24 inches, this would be a great improvement from a 19 inch monitor and that's the hotspot for 1920 resolutions which my video card is more better at I suppose than a 30 inch monitor, plus they are more expensive.
-Both DVI and VGA interface, I would use DVI though having the VGA option is still helpful as I've resorted to it in the past.I don't care for Display port or HDMI
-Also I want to note with speakers, if the monitor has them then whatever but I wouldn't use them personally as that would be what I'd buy with the monitor and i already have my own ideas of just a 2.0 or 2.1 setup. Though it doesn't matter if there is I suppose a good fail safe.
I think that about wraps up specifications if I hadn't covered one than I am sorry but now let's look at my ideas of what would probably be what I was looking for, keep in mind I live in Canada so I do purchase from NCIX.ca though if someone were to recommend a different store that were in Canada with select item in stock I wouldn't mind given my problems with rebates with them awhile back. The monitor I really had in mind was an ASUS VH236H (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=38845) or a ASUS VW246H (http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=39131&vpn=VW246H&manufacture=ASUS) which I had only seen one review of and the specifications are a gray area so if anyone with previous knowledge of them would share it could help with the process.
I don't really want this to be a post against LED backlighting, I know each has their own views and I hope the forum members can respect that, I just am looking for an alternative. Keep in mind I in no means am a fan of Asus with both monitors being so, it's just all I really concluded. And that is the end of the post.
