MMPMM: MadMarc's PowerMac Mod

10 months? Sounds familiar... Durchdiener?

Ah yes, 6-32 UNC... :cussing: Those are some nice standoffs! I turned to eBay when I
was facing a similar predicament.

Luckily I recently found out my neighbour has a mill and a lathe in his basement, so I'll be
able to make use of his services (he's a pensioner, lots of free time, and he used to be in
the semiconductor industry, so he's definitely interested in PC's ) for my copper tubing and
some other stuff. :D

Looking forward to more of this. :)

Genau ich ha Durchdiener gmacht (Flügersdt), so mueni kei WKs verschiebe wägem Studium.

It's great to have someone with such tools and who knows how to make the stuff you need for your rig.

Hehe, ha s gliiche gmacht, DD Of 2005-2007 Besatzer Schuetzenpanzer (long time ago  ).
Esch scho praktisch wenn mer alles erledigt het IMO. :)

@everyone: No worries, we're not talking profanities, and I think we're done now.

Indeed it is.

If I may ask: What are you going to study?

Mechanical engineering at ETH Zurich, starting tomorrow

Ha, I used to study that! Had to drop out due to my health problems though :(.
Now I've switched to ET/IT, starting Wednesday. I was able to transfer quite a few
credits to that though, so I won't need to completely start from scratch.

It's a good degree, I really enjoyed it (for the most part, there will always be things
one does not enjoy as much as others of course). My favourite courses in the first
year were probably calculus/Analysis (yup, I'm a bit deranged  ) and mechanics.

If ME still has as many students as it used to when I was there you'll most likely be
coming through the ET/IT buildings quite a lot (the largest lecture hall is in that area),
so maybe we could meet up at some point. It would certainly nice to talk computers
with somebody in person for a change, I don't really know anyone IRL who's as
enthusiastic about the subject as I am.

Either way, I wish you a good start! :)

PS: If anyone starts whining about how hard it is to pass the first year exams: As long
as you do your homework diligently you shouldn't have a problem. It's a lot of work (at
least it was for me  ), but totally feasible.

Sad to hear that you had to drop it. But ET/IT sounds also very interesting, two mates of mine start studying that. Would be cool if we met once and have a chat about computers.

Wish you a good start too!:)

Time for another update...

dx76.jpg

got my new dremel out to modify the case to fit the new internals

A few pics from testfitting the custom made parts as well as the rear panel with the PCI slots from the second case:

So far everything fit perfectly with slight adjustments here and there. Now it's time to think about how I put everything together properly.

I expect my sleeving tool to arrive next week so I can start sleeving when I get time.

Yeah I'm pretty optimistic about ET/IT. Should make for a nice fit for me.

And we should do that, I'll send you a PM some time in the semester once things
have settled down a bit.

Nice! Sleeving pr0n you say? Yesss!

^ I've come up with a cool idea to help with cable management. I would show you guys but i want to finish mine first before my ideas get copied :P

build looks awesome cant wait for next update>

Thanks man, I'll keep you guys up to date.

Its looking good man!
Are you going to watercool?

Thank you, I designed the case so that it can fit a 60mm thick 360 rad in the front, but atm I don't have the time to build a custom loop. But I certainly plan to watercool asap.

Cable routing could be interesting.. with the fact you have no rear panel to remove.

It won't be as easy as in a normal modern case, but once I've routed the 8, 24 and the two 8 pins for the mb and gpu plus the cables for the SSD and the fans behind the mb tray I won't need to change it again in the coming years as I don't plan to go SLI or Crossfire.
I'll let you know how it went once I've sleeved my PSU

Cool. I wanted to go 360 but my design is more suited to two 240x45's as i wanted to keep the optical drive.

Have you got any plans for where the drives used to be? I did think about loosing the optical draw/tray and putting a temp readout display thing in there.

Once I fit the watercooling loop, the rad and the PSU will take up pretty much all the space up there, so I don't plan to put anything else up there atm. I'm going to add a plate in the front to cover up the area where the rad will go and I'll mount the SSD to this plate. I'd also like to make a cover for the PSU out of the piece with the two G5 logos that was located over the CPU coolers, still thinking about how I get it done best.

Ah yes, cable pr0n! :D

I had the same tool kit from Phobya, the ATX pin remover did not work very well at all for me. Almost
couldn't get the pins out and after a few pins it broke. I've heard some PSUs are easier than others though.

If it should turn out to give you trouble as well, the official Molex tool is this one. It works very
well and you can get it in Lutro0's shop (shipping costs and times are pretty reasonable for a
transatlantic journey), Nils from MDPC-X or on eBay (just search for the part No.). If you get it
on eBay be careful though, some people are offering it at ridiculously inflated prices.

So far it didn't break but you're right for some pins you have to pull really hard to get them out. Hopefully I can get the whole PSU done without breaking any pins or the tool.

Here's how my first sleeved cables turned out:

the tools I used....

...including this little thing I made to put over the pin to get it through the paracord. I tried masking tape first but it really didn't work for me.

On the PSU side I had to use heatshrink on two wires as two ground pins on the card side go into one pin on the PSU.

Overall the two 6+2 pin cable turned out quite nice and the paracord alpenwasser recommended to me is very nice quality and easy to work with.
