Microsoft Will Stop Selling Office

As much as I like to see Microsoft get beaten by its competitors, I want to see it by the competition releasing superior products and offering better value to customers, not some bloody patent troll suppressing its competition and extorting money.

If they win, they will extend this sh*t to everything, including products such as OpenOffice and they will then benefit at our expense.

It's not clear to me what the "not selling Office for several months" or ".. will effect people" actually means.

In terms of not selling, I take that to mean new units of the newest version of Office. Existing versions, older versions already in stores, I would imagine will continue to be sold/used unless there is a massive (understatement) recall of anything with Office written on it - which may include bundled OEM systems. (can't see that happening)

Or - is this a ploy to get those already in shops sold if perhaps sales aren't going to well ?

What a bunch of nonsense. Write the guyz a stupid cheque.

I think it's more of a threat. They are saying that the ban on them selling word will effect the whole office sales, which will affect so many people. I can't see how it will work, they will just get told to sort themselves out or sell it without word for now.

Plus, so many people already own word, not many people buy it do they once they have a copy? Can't be affecting that many people..

That would be a biiig mistake. The old adage of don't feed the trolls applies to patent trolls more than ever. Giving them money would simply encourage them to extort money from everybody else and stifle innovation, especially when a huge company like Microsoft pays up.

No, these people need to be sued into the ground. Microsoft has the money and the connections to ensure this happens.

What u on about trolls ?

If they have the patent - they have the patent.

If u want to use it, u adopt a license. If u don't want to pay, u use something else.

Microsoft's previous angle on this would be to buy them.

hmmm, it was to do with using XML format for saving. I'm pretty sure open office does this too.

Thinking more about it, there are loads of things that use XML.

Wonder if it's open vs commercial ?

Even though this is quite a problem for the IT industry today (sadly) it is refreshing to see typical Microsoft tactics finally backfire on them.

I wonder how they'll fare with that appeal.

XML is widely supported by many apps nowadays, but it's still out-of-date.
