well as tittle really people

looking for some advice on headphones/headset, sound card and speakers

headphone/headset will 99% of the time be for gaming and the odd time for music but not very often

speakers will be for listening to music when chilling out with friends and family or just not gaming

after a sound card that will be happy to do both tasks

This has been asked a lot lately...
I recommend my favourite headphones: beyerdynamic Custom One Pro. They're closed cups with an extremely satisfying bass, if you're a basshead. Bass levels can be trimmed by a mechanical switch however, if you don't want it to overshadow footsteps or things like that. Microphone is up to you I guess, I've been using the Blue Snowball.
Sound Card: Audioengine D3 is a formidable USB sound card. And speakers... I dunno I'm not using speakers besides some ultra cheap 20€ Logitech stuff. I mostly use my headphones. But if you really want some good speakers, there are also Audioengine speakers which are considered high-end for a good price. I don't have any personal experience with those however.

In a very similar thread to this one many people are recommending AKG headphones (Q701, K701, K702). They're very good headphones, but they're absolutely merciless. If you're playing strong compressed music like MP3 128kbit or lower for example you'll hear every encoding artifact. That problem shouldn't come up in dynamically generated sounds like in games however, so, yeah. And when I say merciless I mean that these headphones don't taint the sound, they don't brush over weaknesses and encoding artifacts. They almost perfectly reproduce the sound thats being handed to them, so if you have well encoded stuff like 320kbits mp3 or ogg, or even FLAC, you'll be in for a treat.

Other than that, these things are all quite expensive. Might be useful to know your budget ;)

Studio quality gear!! No gaming headset or PC speakers compare.

Once you've used studio quality stuff you'll never look back!

headphones= Sennheisser Gaming Ones as you are gaming with them
speakers= Corsair SP2500's should do the trick without breaking the bank
soundcard= Asus Essence STX great audio quality
Hope this helps

ahh sorry man i forgot to say that im not able to use my pci-e x1 slot due to the first one being inline with the motherboard heat sink, which looks to high to allow anything to slot in there and the second one is covered by the gpu

id rather have an internal sound card tho to save having stuff on the desk

I have a USB sound card also and It's not on my desk. It's behind it, well out of reach / out of my way. It's not like it'll have to dangle in your face all the time ;)

haha every time i think usb audio i just think of another item sitting on my desk. i just think of it to look more like a usb hub rather than some smaller like a memory stick, not sure why but just another thing my brain in intent on doing.

maybe it would be a better option than having to find a good pci sound card

Do you not have a x16 or x8 slot showing you could put an STX in or are all of your PCIe slots effectively occupied?

After much reading, confusion and a thread like this I decided to go with an Essence STX, Corsair SP2500's and Beyerdynamic DT990's although I haven't got round to buying the headphones just yet, mainly because I think i'll end up saving for Manufakturs to match my rig and so first I must build my rig. The Corsair SP2500's are great and were just a convenient solution for using with my PC and console because of the choice of inputs. I have never actually compared my STX to onboard audio but erm it looks pretty!
