Looking at buying a new router.

Hey guys,

I'm looking out to buy a new router but unsure of what brands or models I should be looking out for, haven't been in the loop in the area of routers.

Suggestions and opinions would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Which ISP are you with? and I'm guessing you mean modem router, not router.

You need to check you can just change the routers as some ISPs lock their routers so you have to use theirs, not buy one after market.

If you want a solid connection, and high security, the Belkin ones are good - but their firewalls are a little too restrictive for certain things like gaming, and so dont work too well with online games.
Other than that, Netgear are always a good choice, and with their new systems bragging 600mbps, they definitely seem a good choice. Just make sure you have the adapters to fully benefit from that

I'm in Australia so I wouldn't have the same ISP as you guys.

I currently have a Belkin and have had no problems with it throughout the years, only started to play up a bit now with dropouts through a wifi connection to the laptop (found through a process of elimination, tried retesting the router and everything)

Alright, fair enough.

Netgear's always good. I'd avoid Belkin due to bad experiences in the past with a router and an adapter both having issues. I'm not sure about other brand's though. My ISP over here brags about their own router's being the most stable so I'm using the BT Homehub atm, which you wont be able to get and I've not had a problem with that.

So my advice may be a little outdated as I've been using this for a year

have a word with your isp and see if they can offer you a free one to replace you dying one is always a good start, especially if they gave it to you in the first place

I'd go for the second link - Netgear WNDR3800 N600

You're never really gunna get up to 900mbps so I dont think I could justify spending more on that one.

They look good though

Hi Mate,
I noticed from your post you have a particular supplier already in mind.
I would draw your attention to these 2 and then go and look at some reviews for them.

I've used Billion Bipac gear and it's some of the best "Consumer" gear out there at the minute in terms of wireless performance and it's ability to deal with less than perfect ADSL connections, lots of people rate them.
I've used Draytek, Belkin, Thomson, Cisco, Netgear, Dlink and Billion.
Bt Homehub use a lantiq chip set which is quite good although I've heard complaints that Wi Fi range isn't up to much.

If I was after a router with loads of functionality that I might or might not require in the future I would go with a Draytek, If I was after a device that I wanted to switch on configure relatively easily and just leave to do it's thing I'd buy a Billion Bipac.

Cheers
Lee

agreed lee, i have a draytek 2920n providing a second wireless signal.
whilst it wasn't the easiest to set up for use on VM,
now it is, the only thing i have ever had to login to the gui for was to add a printer to the usb port, and thats in the last 3 years so 1 access in 3 years is great for plug n play lol
