Liquid metal TIM on GPU?

Ok Im chasing lower temps and silence on my system as my gtx 1080 FE starts to throttle at 45 degrees. Ive been looking for tge best TIM and its always the coolab liquid ultra. Both my blocks are nickel plated copper so there should be no reaction.

Is it safe to use liquid metal TIM on your gpu die?

Dont want to kill my £700 GPU

Edit: So your watercooled cards throttle at 45C? Then something is clearly wrong as they shouldn't throttle before they reach about 83C. You sure this isn't g-sync down volting the card?

Yes its safe. I have done it for years with good results. Just remember that you have to use a VERY small amount and spread it. The layer you put on there should incredibly thin, and also make sure none of the TIM spreads anywhere other than the surface of the die.

Check out coollaboratory how they do it. Although personally I dont like using a cotton bud. I prefer a flat spatula.

My idle temps are around 19C and fully loaded top out at 39C on both 980Tis. I think I had better results on my 780s though.

I didnt know gsync could downvolt the card??

From what ive read its pretty normal for gpu boost 3.0 my card is clocked at 2038 and will drop down to 2025 and then 2012 as the temp increases.

Thats perfect cheers warchild. Im only chasing 2 or 3 degrees to keep the overclock at the level I want whilst maintaining system silence. I was considering push pull on my ut60 but will try this first before spending another £75 on fans

Ah I see. Don't put an AIO on it :D

I can't see why not. If people use it on a delidded CPU then a GPU core would be absolutely no different. I mean, it's a piece of silicon.

Indeed it does that even for my air cooled 1080 FE. Start off by 1835 MHz and then drops down to 1795 or something over time. But sometimes it can drop below stock clock, and this happens when the card isn't being taxed very hard by a game, that just can't torture the card which is usually caused by g-sync.

But I'm just not seeing it as very important. I won't feel the difference anyway.

I really don't see the point in a push pull configuration since there is only between 1 and 3 degrees difference, and added noise. I'd prefer swapping a 360 with a 480 rad myself with more watt dissipation from higher surface area. Thats just 1 extra fan as opposed to an extra 3 in push pull. If you cant fit a 480, then I would stick with the push config.

Also depending on your card. Liquid TIM could drop your temp by up to 7 or 8 degrees if you are lucky.

As for your clock behaviour, I have nothing to add because I have no experience with GPU 3.0. I thought you could unlink the temp limit and power limit values and set them all to max?

No space for bigger rads unfortunatley Ive squeezed all I can i to my heavily modded H440 although I am thinking of changing to a 780t or enthoo primo in the future.

Again, I cant comment too much since I dont have a 10XX series card but I find it strange you need to crank up the fans to get 38 and 40C. My fans are pwm vardars set to about 5V maybe less, and 2 gpus are topping about 39C. It's quiet but not silent like you want.

I guess you need to find the ultimate balance for your system.

You should have bought the Cool Lab Ultra. Gives a slight better result. But PRo is still oustanding.
 
Swapped for ultra got in there just in time. I think my temps are so high because all my ML pro fans are at 25 percent speed

Do you have them fixed at 25%?

Thats a little too low for my liking. I like silence, but I dont like a hot room since those rads are probably quite warm to the touch. But.. silence is golden :)

Quite probably dude. I am running my Penetrators (not SP but AF) at 7v and they are inaudible. When clocked to 1600mhz the 950 hits about 42c. Not bad but I bet if I stuck the fans on full pelt it would be under 40c. It's whether that noise is worth it or not. It sounds like a friggin typhoon is passing through my living room lol.

They are fixed till my cpu temp reaches 55 degrees and then they slowly increase as the cpu temp does but my cpu never goes over 55 so my system remains silent
