Laptop or Shuttle?

Basically, with uni coming up I'm in need of a new system. As I see it I have 3 options:

1 - A mac laptop - something like a macbook pro

2 - A windows laptop - the Sony SZ1 or the Asus W2JC come to mind

3 - A Shuttle with a 20" Dell widescreen or something

Each has their advantages and disadvantages, but I'm looking for something reasonably powerful with a half decent graphics card - something like the new core duo & a 7600 or x1600, better if its in a shuttle. Storage really isn't an issue, however speed is - so smaller faster hard disk over larger slower one - my current rig will be converted to a fileserver to dump all my crap on :) It's gunna be used to play some games, mainly work etc though, so a reasonably nice kb etc is a must. Screen size, widescreen would be good but not essential, reasonably high res cause I dont like scrolling much and have reasonable eyesight.

Budget wise - im flexible - looking at a grand upwards, though if its something special I'm willing to go up to jus under 2. This should give me a fairly decent spec machine in any of the three categories above.

I am willing to consider alternatives, though no silly suggestions such as a CM Stacker :P its gotta be able to fit in a uni room & be semi portable :) (hence the consideration of laptops & shuttles)

Anyhow....suggestions please? :)

Dave

(posted in the intel section as both laptops use core duo - though for the shuttle I'm willing to consider AMD options)

Shuttle and mod the top drive bay to an LCD on a surveryor setup. So you'll cut a hole in the top of the shuttle case around the drive bay, you push down on the lcd and it flips up. :)

Deffo get a shuttle - those things are lush :D

Plus you look like a ponce taking a lappy to class and are very likely to get it pinched in halls. At least with a shuttle they won't know what the hell it is ;)

mmmm shuttle:yumyum:

ive always wanted to build one of those but i never got round to it:rolleyes:

you can build yourself a nice shuttle for about £500-1k

i would say a 3000+ overclocked (possible heat build up in a shuttle tho) or a 3500+

a 7800gt,1 or 2 gb of some decent ram i think you get the jist:)

Yep the shuttle gets my vote, you can build an awesome little rig that'll be suitable for an task you're gonna throw at it. The only real benefit that the lappy would provide you is by being truly wireless. Instead I'd buy a digital voice recorder for your lectures and a wifi card for the shuttle from the money you'll save by not getting a laptop. Plus, a laptop is a prime target for theft. My work provides me with a laptop, but I take my voice recorder to lectures with me...it works a treat. Just my 0.02c worth :)

Or the fourth option perhaps? Im thinking both?

As some have suggested, you can spend a grand and get a nice shuttle, and then get a cheaper laptop - just to do work on - ie a word processor, nothing more?

Shuttle has my vote, those little boxes are sexy and you can still do a lot with them.

For an Intel shuttle, go with the SD31P and for an AMD shuttle go for the SN26P. Or if you are not in a hurry wait for the Shuttle SN27P2 and you will get a shuttle with new AMD socket and finally with memory higher than the actual and limited 2Gb.

You talking bout getting an actual Shuttle or building yourself a SFF system? Anyways, a SFF gets my vote, make those things darn sexy (W/C it! :D)

I am indeed tempted :)

Just gotta work out with the rents how blank a blank cheque will be :)

Crikey you're lucky mate, if I ever wanted anything I had to fork out for it myself. It's a nice gesture though on behalf of your parents, lemme guess you have to pay for your tuitions though right?

Up until now I have pretty much paid for anything I have wanted/needed in relation to technology - had a reasonably good part time job in IT. However with my final exams I had to stop working so I could concentrate on my exams, and so basically my parents said they would buy it for me.

Oh, and they are paying all my living costs, and I'm taking a government loan for the tution costs (circa 3k a year).
