Laptop Options

So i'm off to university in september [Edinurgh, to do mechanical and electrical engineering] and I figured the easiest thing to take computer wise was a laptop simply for transport, taking to the library etc and I really want you guys' opinions.

I'm looking to spend about £900 absolute max but the less i spend on this the more i can transform in to vodka!

A large screen is a must have and ability for light gaming (CS:S etc) would be a welcome bonus

Where would you start?

any advice no matter how small would be awesome guys :)

I reckon you could be thinking of buying at the right time.

I'd look out for much cheapness on Dx10 laptops. 4g, pre-i7/i5, HD4xxx or GT2xx, nice 17", large drive

that's true but i'm hoping that it will last quite a few years :/

for about £870 you can get i5, 4gb DDR3, 500gb hard drive, 17" screen, 5650 graphics and a beasty battery from dell

i hate dell though.

Those specs sound pretty good for the money tbh

yeah i thought so too

i'll be buying it in a couple of months so maybe prices will go down / specs go up

Check out MSI's laptops. Great specs, very well built, and even better prices. Since MSI doesn't spend any money at all for advertising their notebooks it reflects greatly in the prices.

I just picked up a Core i5, 4gb ddr3, 320gb hdd, 15.6" screen for school and it only cost me $579 here in the US!

Some great prices stateside, for me £800+ is alot for a laptop and personally would look towards mbp, but I know the op isn't after one.

I've usually gone for dell laptops, not too bad and some good deals on usually

got my blu ray laptop, 4gb of ram etc. for £600 iirc

mbp being macbook pro?

This is what my MSI scores in Windows Assessment. Not bad for $549!
