laptop not working correctly

emachine e525 series

the laptop boots up sometimes and it works fine when it has had a succesful boot up

but once you restart for updates it doesn't come back on it just goes to a black screen there is lights that show the charger is working but the battery is not holding a charge ano this because ever time the laptop starts up and if you take charger out it says 0%
but i dont think that is the problem

the harddrive is spilling because i have listened to it when it is booting

is there any suggestions to why this laptop might not be booting correctly could it be the screen not displaying or anything like that

thanks for the help people :D

i am open for more questions if asked
if i have wrote something and you are not sure what it ment to say i can rewrite it

i am dyslectic so my grammer and spelling is not great

i am not sure if i have put this in the correct posting area

I'd say the hard drive is goosed. I'd download the Hiren's Boot CD ISO, put it on a cd or usb drive, boot off it and use one of the many tools to get any data you want off the laptop toot sweet.

You could replace the hard drive but if it's an old laptop you may struggle, and as the battery is no longer holding a charge it's no longer a portable device. I'd bin it once you get your data off it and get a new laptop, which would probably cost less than a replacement battery and hard drive for your old one.

What do you mean by spilling?

As and when you can get the laptop booted up next to go to

Start >>> Accessories >>>

Then right click on

Command Prompt

Then select and click on

Run as Administrator

You will now have a black window pop up and has some white writing in it.

Type in the following

sfc /scannow

This will run and check the files for Windows again known checksum values that it is supposed to have, and hopefully fix the problem you have been getting....

**Edit**

Forgot to mention that running sfc will take quite a long time so make sure you are running off charger and don't need to use the machine for a hour or maybe longer (have known it to take 3 or 4 hours sometimes on older machines)

**End of Edit**
Next.... A basic clean up and performance kick for it....

Open file / windows explorer and select

My Computer >>> Drive C >>> Users >>>(Your User name)

Now in the address bar near top you need to add

\AppData

This is so it will enter a hidden folder. The Folder address should say for example

C:\Users\YouWhat\AppData\

You now have 3 folders,

Select Local >>> Temp and now delete everything it will let you (grant it Admin rights if / when it asks you)

Next go to

My Computer >>> Drive C >>> Windows >>> SoftwareDistribution

Now go into each of the folders you see here (the nested folders inside of these don't matter) and delete everything inside of them that it will let you (You will be prompted to give Administrator permision, Click Continue. This clears the Windows Update files that have been installed in past)

Now go to;

My Computer >>> Drive C >>> Windows >>> Temp

Again delete everything it will let you.

Finally go to

My Computer >>> Drive C >>> Windows >>> Prefetch

Again delete everything it will let you, then go to your desktop and Empty your recycle bin and immediately reboot your machine.

You will now need to check for Updates in Windows Update as it will of wiped out the list of what you have updated and installed in the past (and probably freed up several gig of hard drive space in process), even if it says you have nothing to install / update, this needs to be done so as it knows what updates are installed and how upto date your Windows install is.

Other than these stop gap measures, you will more than likely need to reformat the hard drive (and not quick format so as to refresh the magnetic things on the hard drive as they like everything, degrade and get weaker over time) and reinstall Windows, so make sure you have backed up your data to an external hard drive, burn some DVD's off and also upload to one of your Cloud space providers eg Microsofts OneDrive, Googles GDrive (or Google Drive as it is also called), The Box, or wherever else you may hold accounts for, the get your backup / Windows restore DVD out and perform a clean install (There are many guides for this)

Is your charger connecting 100% in its socket, any kinks or breaks in the cable? have you tried using an external monitor, it could very well just be the screen or the inverter, I have a stack of older laptops which all have dead screens but still "boot" albeit with a monitor but they still work.
